I like both fames but i don't think XII creates the same atmosphere as VII and I didn't get into the story as much

I haven't played VII, so I'm going to go with XII. While I haven't finished it yet, I like it, and I really don't get all the hate.

Somebody's giving me a free copy of FFVII soon, so I'll hopefully be able to make a proper comparison afterwards.
