No right answer.
Immigration policies are import however deportation costs a lot while it costs little to sneak in and the benefits are great.
Anything more harsh just seems... well harsh.

Politically speaking, the Republican's party's anti-immigration stance has essentially lost them Hispanics as a demographic. This is particularly ironic considering how religious Hispanics are and how they have several other natural affinities with Republican values.
I think we need to completely overhaul the way we look at our relationship to our neighbors. Our border with Mexico has become like a military state. We need to legalize marijuana and take a new look at how we currently handle immigration. The last time we tried to overhaul immigration it was a huge failure. I am not sure whether Obama is going to address it or not. It might be an issue he worries about more on the campaign trail in 2012.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

He's from the UK. So he probably means like the Asylum centers and such.

Actually Europe faces a lot of the same problems the U.S. does, at least financially. The cultural dynamics are quite a bit different though.
The main immigrants to Europe are Muslims. They are moving from a very religious culture to a very secular culture. Many Muslims have had trouble integrating into that society. Many European citizens are worried that the Muslim value system is in many ways incompatible with their own.

What I find funny about immigration is - in Mexico, I dare a U.S. citizen to try and get a job without papers. My sister loves Mexico, but has to get tons of paperwork to work there.
Yet, I can't tell you the number of places I've been where someone can't speak English and can get jobs.
I believe in a country of laws. If you think a law is wrong, fight to have it changed. Breaking it is not the right answer.
So for me, illegal immigrants should be dealt with, with accordance to the law. Deported whenever caught.
That being said, I think we need to change the laws with respect to immigration. I think it should be a lot easier to get in this country. My feelings on the subject however, don't trump the law.

A lot of muslims I know intergrate quite well with English culture. It is true that the country is secular and religion is largely redundant here, however, they are often active in their own communities for religious fulfilment and outside of their communities they very adaptable people so it works very well for them.
-edit-
I think the reason for this is that England does not intefere largely with peoples religious beliefs and religious societies.

muslims probably do intergrate fine (despite the best efforts of the media) but im afraid that religion interferes far too much with politics here, we have "faith" schools and shit, once theyre gone, intergration will be much better as religion wont be a factor
Immigration has a massive benefit to our economy. Afterall, our population is made up of 8% of immigrants, but they make up for 10% of our GDP (which puts those "they come here to mooch off our benefits" arguments to shame).
At the same time, immigration has put a big strain on our public services, and bringing them back up to scratch will be costly, but, overall, immigration has a positive effect on our economy.
