Forums - Sony - MLB: The Show 09 Reaches AAA!!!!

@ axumblade

That's some nice progress over the years

The term AAA originated from marketers to describe high-profile, big budget games. While so-called AAA games are expected to score highly, they don't always do. Likewise, lower profile, lower budget "sleeper hits" may score highly, but would not be considered AAA.

I'd say that it's appropriated to use the term AAA to refer to a game that has a big budget and is anticipated to score highly. The score itself isn't the measure, it's the budget and the expectation.

Overuse of any expression dilutes its meaning. Please try to choose your words more carefully.

I don't see how 90% MLB 09 is any better than 89% MLB 09, but nevertheless, excellent reviews.

Meanings of words often change over the years. Otherwise, we'd all still be having a gay old time.

I agree with that. That's a different matter than using words carelessly without regard for how other people around you are using them.

This "AAA" business was a term that first started being thrown around by executives without being clearly defined. Now a bunch of people on the internet are trying to assign it a variety of arbitrary definitions. I believe that the definition I gave better captures its meaning as it has been used.

If a word captures a meaningful distinction, let's use it for that meaningful distinction and not use it for other distinctions. If a game is highly rated, let's just say it's highly rated.

In other news on 360: Fable II and Left4Dead are not AAA but Peggle after 6 reviews is.

I'm not saying it will stay that way....and Peggle is pretty damn fun. I'd rather play that then kill zombies any day of the week. :D

I just think that it's one of those rare occurances where a sports game actually gets to the AAA rating. I hope it will stay up there but you never know. It is a PS3 US exclusive so other places in the world and other magazines might just completely ignore the game. Also, the game is getting better every year apparently according to critics.

MLB 07 - 77
MLB 08 - 85
MLB 09 - 90

Also the year, and the first number in the score should correspond. :D (but not really)

More than half of the +90 rated games on Xbox fall under the Sport genre catagory.

Just wanted you to know.

I really hope people will stop using this AAA bullshit.

I really hope that you will get out of my thread if you don't like it.

You know, I wasn't referring to you or your thread; I was talking about how some people take Metacritic's score way too seriously. I mean if we go by Metascore, Guitar Hero II (a PS2 port for Xbox 360) is AAA, and Uncharted is not, that really doesn't make any sense, but some people try to show the scores as an indication of these games' status.

i agree

I did say in recent times earlier in the thread...lol. Actually, if it keeps at a 90 on metacritic, it'll be the only sports game so far in this generation to have a score that high.

Nope

This game is the definitive baseball game availible and has recieved excellent praise. Regardless of metacritic score; its AAA in my book, just like Fable 2 and Valkyria Chronicles, both game have less than 90 in meta but are top quality product that very few will regret buying.

I should have figured you were going to play that card but I guess it just didn't occur to me. I guess if you count racing games as sports games. I normally just view racing as racing due to the abundance of them that come out in a year, the diversity of the racing genre, and the optional peripherals that you can use for the games.

I also view racing as racing, but I just wanted "to play that card".

COOL!!

Wonder if it can stay there... I know it can stay above 85!
