Based on sold to retail data, the PS3 vs 360 sales gap was 6.7 million units by the end of 2008.
VGChartz had the end user sales gap at 7.7 million units, so according to VGChartz there were 1 million more PS3s on the shelves than 360s.
To me this seems strange, as 360s at least over here seem to remain on the shelves longer than PS3s and the PS3 over that time sold out a couple of times over this period, while there are still 119 Euro (incl. tax) 360 holiday season systems left in stores here as of today (the 30 euro off deal lasted a few months until the end of 2008).
1 million extra PS3s is a lot of extra shelf space! Are the PS3 sections in the average game store twice as big as for the 360 section or something?

In christmas 08 there were plenty of reports of Best Buys and other stores being stocked with hundreds of PS3's to the point of them being all over the store. Blu-ray players were the big deal this holiday, so Sony probably had an easy time convincing retailers to buy plenty of stock. It isn't that hard to believe they stuffed the channels this time around.
Microsoft has done the same before, but didn't apear to do so this year, so again it isn't all that unbelievable.
