@hyruken

At a time Nintendo is considering raising the price of the wii (in the UK and I am sure Europe will follow) you recommend Sony cut the price of the PS3 which is already selling at a lost.

It's simple economics that make this so unlikely, but maybe not impossible.

You see this as war against x360. Sony sees this as a war against the survival of their gaming division and the recession.

There is a BIG, BIG difference.

If it is "simple economics" then why would Sony bother at all? If they are just to make a loss as you say then why not just say "we'll we tried lads, lets call it a day for the PS3 as we are not making any money?".

Sony needs to keep the PS3 selling, it will make losses, especially at this financial meltdown times. But it will set itself up to make money in the long run by having as many of them out there as possible. It will be able to do what MS is doing and get money from it's games. Sony is spending a vast amount of money to try and be number 1,2 not to be number 3.  Look at the Wii. It sell's shead loads of software because it has a lot of people with the console. Most companies make a loss on their hardware, that is nothing new and will continue to be that way. But you can make that money back from your software. If the PS3 numbers go lower and lower then that will make Sony lose just as much money due to that effecting the image of the company.

Everyone keeps asking for a PS3 price cut, how many have they had already? Wasn't the first price cut like 6 months in? Or was the a new sku? I know in Japan they cut the price..or new sku? Either way the card has been played, after a frequent price cuts can lower public opinion of the product.

Anyway, Wii numbers are ridiculous this week.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

seems that no software will move consoles any more

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Wii is a monster 220k, is a great result.

Wow what spurred that on? Wii continues to kill everything in America.. I guess that's the momentum it's carrying.. Say hello to the next 10 year console everyone.

Where have you been?

For the HD twins? Yeah it's pretty much over. All that's left is FF13 Japan and GT5 Europe (although it will probably lead to short spikes in Japan/USA as well).

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Killzone 2 was very frontloaded. Its legs will be short in America.

Yeah I do. I mean, this market is rather unpredictable but at this point I don't see anything (software wise) propelling any of the HD twins up to a new plateau besides those two titles.

The 360 is three years + old, the ps3 is two years + old, both have ample software available (while I do think the 360 has the advantadge there, the ps3 catalogue has increased enough it's not gonna be an issue to most people).

Those are the last marquee franchises from last-gen still to be released. Of course we will see spikes here and there occasionally, but games actually having a lasting effect? From my point of view those two and within the constrains of the specified regions. Honestly, I'm even sceptical about long-term effects of FF13 in Japan, but for the moment I'm leaning positive about it.

But as I said, this market is unpredictable and this particular generation is tearing apart some long-standing traditions...
