Forums - Gaming - Will there ever be a JRPG as well known as FF7? A FF7-Killer, if you may.

What kind of impact has Pokemon made on the industry and the genre? aside from being phenomenally popular itself? The concept of collecting monsters has been used in RPGs before, and I dont see a lot of games inspired by Pokemon.

FFVII on the other hand has introduced cinematic way to tell a story and arguably brought the genre to 3d. But more importantly - it has brought the attention of masses to the whole genre and made it mainstream. Even today's RPGs are in many ways inspired by FFVII. It has really done something bigger than just "sold a lot"

I am not going to argue impact with you, as the both of us lack enough knowledge to make an educated argument on that front.

The question is about whether or not a JRPG will ever be better-known than FF7. The answer is clearly yes, as Pokemon has been better known for over a decade.

The pokemon is well known as a whole franchise with movies, games, cards, mascots not as a great game.

Pokemon didn't even cross my mind when I came into this thread, and I was promptly e-slapped across the face when I saw SmokedHostage's post.

Pokemon blows FF7 out of the water when it comes to recognition and impact. There's a freakin Pokemon theme park in Japan on top of everything else everyone already mentioned. All inspired by the original Red and Blue.

yea you can say "lol any ff7 killers besides pokemon" but thats just dumb
pokemon is the ff7 killer

I still think that the impact the TC is talking about is more than just sales, its sales and quality and the way FF7 is in the "legendary" status with games like OoT.

So pokemon may have sold more, but wont do what FF7 has done, it has the potential to do it, since it sells so much, but quality improvements are needed.

Sort of both, Yes. Pokemon has achieved Legendary status because it's so well known, but that has to do with the mass marketting that pokemon has recieved. Trading Cards, Anime Series, Spin-off games, Tamagatchi pets even! Many of those who have watched the anime show may be interested in buying the game because its a video-game based off a anime show they watch.

um the anime is based on the games

the game came out February 27, 1996

the anime came out in April 1, 1997

-----------------------------------------------

pokemon red blue and green is the best selling jrpg to date with over 30 million in sales

the series as a whole has sold over 186 million

it spawned a trading card series spinoffs a anime series and 12 movies

there were no kids when i was growing up who didn't know of pokemon all most none played final fantasy 7

Its like saying nintendogs is influencial and a evolution in gaming because it has sold a lot.

And pokemon hasnt killed FF7 in anyway, though they might share some type of demographic, they are too different to actually affect or compete with each other. By different I mostly mean, FF7 is better than pokemon.

I saw the anime, that got me into playing the games, and it did with all the people I know, you saw the anime and said:Hey, there is a game too; and played it later. You can explain this just by knowing that pikachu is the most known pokemon and that is thanks to the series, since no one cared about it in pokemon red/blue. And that many people though the game was a product of the anime.

And who cares if kids knew about it, Seven Samurai(seven Lol) is one of the most influencial movies and not much people know about it unless they know something about movies, even though it inspired many movies later.

Pokemon is awesome but its not a better game then FFVII. No one in there right mind will argue that. FFVII ALONE sells on par or better then a Poke game ALONE (because Pokemon game sales are grouped by dif skus).

FFVII will have to be showed up one day, but it just hasnt happened yet. In order to pull it off the game must...
rewrite what we think of JRPGs
create a cast of lovable chars
have deep story, spreading multiple story archs
harness the hardware of its time to the fullest( it will b an exclusive 4 sure)
be hyped to holy hell
massive marketing campaign on par with Halo

hop to it VG developers, make it happen

@DKHustin
u sound like another hater of FFVII for stupid reasons.
Pokemon has the wierdest fucking hairstyles ive ever seen. the story is as shallow as a street puddle. If u watch the show, u cannot find more winey characters.

and Aeris useless? rediculous seeing that all the characters were fully customizable, and Aeris had more MP then anyone else.

and as far Limit Breaks go....
GREAT GOSPEL!
whole party becomes invincible and get instant LB meter full.
dont spu garbage...

lol yeah pokemon was a better game.

Ash/red/yellow(whatever the stupid name u call him) is so deep, he doesnt speak, and his hat, and his bike, HE IS A 10 YEAR OLD KID THAT TRAVELS ALONE OMG!!! I cried so much the 11nth time I fought Team Rocket. OMG you can breed pokemon and have 130 of the 151 pokemon so I have to buy the other version or make my friends get it so I can have all the pokemon. It was so fun after 10 years when I got to choose again one of 3 pokemon and beat the gym leader and win the pokemon league in every game, thats so FUN!!!!

I say FF7 is better and Im a 18 year old guy, and I liked Pokemon when I was 9.
