Forums - Gaming - Will there ever be a JRPG as well known as FF7? A FF7-Killer, if you may.

The topic for this thread is not clear.

If we are only talking about well-known, there are more people know about Pokemon than FF and how or if Pokemon has any influence of future JRPG games shouldn't matter.

If we are talking about FF7-killer in term quality and influence, that would be entirely different argument.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Maybe, but if it's on those terms then your avatar provides a very good indicator of where we might look.

well... I don't want to be biased

I first looked at this thread and thought that there really aren't and won't be an JRPGS that could really contend with FF7. Then someone brought up pokemon. I always forget about pokemon when it comes to JRPG discussions. Yeah pokemon blows final fantasy 7 out of the water.

I mean pokemon was on the news for being banned, upcoming movie, record sales, fake products, and so on. It was just that big. Kids would rather play pokemon than kickball during recess. Not to mention every main pokemon game outsells FF7.

Maybe in the future a new FF will take its spot or maybe Dragon quest will finally see widespread popularity.

I still think that the impact the TC is talking about is more than just sales, its sales and quality and the way FF7 is in the "legendary" status with games like OoT.

So pokemon may have sold more, but wont do what FF7 has done, it has the potential to do it, since it sells so much, but quality improvements are needed.

Cinematic storytelling already existed in Final Fantasy VI, and that game did it better. In terms of quality, it gets the Hell kicked outo f it by several games in its own series.

In terms of influence, even "cinematic games" go back to Final Fantasy 2 (the NES one). In terms of influence on genrne tropes, Dragon Quest kicks the crap out of Final Fantasy VII so hard it's difficult to even comprehend.

In terms of cultural impact, Pokemon eats it alive.

I'm not sure by what metric one could say that FF7 is the most "well-known" JRPG.

Sort of both, Yes. Pokemon has achieved Legendary status because it's so well known, but that has to do with the mass marketting that pokemon has recieved. Trading Cards, Anime Series, Spin-off games, Tamagatchi pets even! Many of those who have watched the anime show may be interested in buying the game because its a video-game based off a anime show they watch.

It's hard to put Final Fantasy 7 in the same light, yes. Final Fantasy 7 has recieved quite a bit of marketting as well but no where near as much as Pokemon.

The question that has people wondering now is that yes, Pokemon is more well known. That's been established as of the second reply to this thread, but pokemon won't and I don't believe ever will contribute as much to the JRPG genre as a whole than FF7 will. Every JRPG with a animated, CGI, FMV, etc cutscene owes that to Final Fantasy 7. We may not realize it but Final Fantasy's 7 impact could infact be greater than that of Pokemon. Even if some people don't care enough about their gaming history to study up on it.

Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

No, they do not.
