I first looked at this thread and thought that there really aren't and won't be an JRPGS that could really contend with FF7. Then someone brought up pokemon. I always forget about pokemon when it comes to JRPG discussions. Yeah pokemon blows final fantasy 7 out of the water.
I mean pokemon was on the news for being banned, upcoming movie, record sales, fake products, and so on. It was just that big. Kids would rather play pokemon than kickball during recess. Not to mention every main pokemon game outsells FF7.
Maybe in the future a new FF will take its spot or maybe Dragon quest will finally see widespread popularity.
