Although a majority of Americans believe the seriousness of global warming is either correctly portrayed in the news or underestimated, a record-high 41% now say it is exaggerated. This represents the highest level of public skepticism about mainstream reporting on global warming seen in more than a decade of Gallup polling on the subject.

Since 1997, Republicans have grown increasingly likely to believe media coverage of global warming is exaggerated , and that trend continues in the 2009 survey; however, this year marks a relatively sharp increase among independents as well. In just the past year, Republican doubters grew from 59% to 66%, and independents from 33% to 44%, while the rate among Democrats remained close to 20%.

Two things about this...

A. This was Americans, everyone knows they have been reluctant to accept that the climate is changing, they have just caught up.

B. Global warming is a term I don't agree with, climate change is the proper term as it's not all going to get warmer, it's going to bring on a climate shift. In fact, in the UK it is predicted to get colder. So Climate change is how they should have described it.

Take a look at the bottom of this graphic. They try to take into account the different terms "green house effect" and global warming. It's also a US only survey.

This is bullshit, half my state just burnt to the ground, california had the same thing and katrina was enough for most americans to wake up.

Why do people say this crap. Wan to know the truth, recently announced news has said that by 2100 the ocean will rise, not by the originally thought 50 - 80cm but by up to 1 meter. Take your pick, holiday destinations around the world just won't be there anymore. Look at the maldives as an example.

Go look at the IPCC reports and then tell me its crap. I ------ hate CC deniers, what is wrong with people. Just read a book please.

This is kind of a weird survey. I'm not quite sure how I'd answer because I don't see them differentiating between climate change and "global warming", which thanks to the media has been inextricably linked to man-made sources.

I think the wording could use a little work here.

 Well, Gallup is basicly the king of polling in the US, and they have been asking these questions for over ten years. Green House Effect, Global Warming, Climate Change all refer to the same thing here. "Someone" keeps changing the terminology because they like certain names better.

Climate Change is too vague a term. Climates change, and there is no arguement in that. We used to be in an ice age 10,000 years ago, so climates do obviously change. But what they are really asking is if increased man made CO2 levels is what is causing climate change, and if it is getting warmer and that sea levels will rise. Just calling it climate change does not imply any of that.

People should be getting skeptical, at least regarding the "man-made" hypothesis. It's been about a decade now and the climates (at least in the US) have pretty much remained the same.

Clearly there is overall climate change, but for us to think that we can influence it has always been a bit arrogant and conceited, IMO. I seriously doubt that we can have any significant impact on the climate patterns of the Earth.

Do you know what the ozone layer is? If you believe that that problem was caused by cfc's in the atmosphere from hairspray, because once we figured that out all cfs filled products were killed, then you must naturally assume that co2 is another potential man induced problem. Please go and read something, it is happening.

Broncos, just go look at food output from farming, not just in Australia where it has been so dry and without rain our output has reduced about 50%, but your own country.

If scientists are wrong then thats fine, it will stop you funding extremist terrorism, through oil, in the middle east. This is what Obama is using to sell green technology to america.

But if your wrong, just imagine how many people will be affected, even just from the sea level rise alone, we're talking MASS migration and mexico is nothing compared.

Food prices such as grain, of which i think 70% of the worlds population only eat grains, have shot up in value as droughts have affected soil quality and rainfall. Wer'e talking MASS starvation on a scale unheard of. Even the UN has been requesting governments to give more money for this very issue.
