BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- Fifteen people died Wednesday in the shooting spree in the German town of Winnenden, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Stuttgart, police spokeswoman Renate Roesch told CNN.

At least five people were injured. The gunman is dead, she said.

The shooting, which lasted about two minutes, happened at the Albertville-Realschule Winnenden school, a junior high school, about 9:30 a.m. About 1,000 students attend the school.

Police said the gunman was a 17-year-old former student dressed in military gear.

Actually more than 15 people already died

If you watch German TV, you can see that many psychologists try to explain why this cruel action happened.

The easiest answer is certainly violent games. I think you already know that Germany has the strictest laws concerning to this kind of games thanks to previous ramapges like in Dresden. Many policians do think the same too, so they made boxarts looking like this:

Violent videogames are already forbidden in Germany as far as I know.

Which is why the link between 'violent video games'  and actual violent actions is so far-fetched and weak  that it's not even funny.  If you're nuts enough to go on a rampage and murder people with a gun,  I'm pretty sure that it's not the video games that will send you to that level.

Yes but not all violent games are forbidden here. Maybe this will happen thanks to this case here.

Soo, at the moment the journalists seem to be rather focused on the real problems (social interaction, guns), etc. . But I guess it's inevitable that someone jumps on the videogame-ban train again, sooner or later.

Well i think counselling is the answer in addition to laws restriciting all guns and bullets. Knife crime isn't nearly as deadly

Some politician (a Christ Democrat) will surely go for videogames again but the reactions on "Zeit" and "Spiegel" so far clearly show that the Germans highly dislike it when politicians try to blame videogames for everything.

That being said the topic shouldn't be videogames but the students shot. 16 people already, the gunman as well and several policemen have been hurt. Videogames aren't that important now, really...

I'm betting that guy played Counter-Strike 1.6 and thus is a victim of violent computer games :D
