The Nintendo Wii has shed its reputation as a "family-friendly" console by allowing the release of Sega's mature action game MadWorld, according to a statement from watchdog group National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF).
While the group reminds parents to pay attention to what video games their children play, NIMF President Dr. David Walsh expressed disappointment over MadWorld's inclusion in the Wii library:
In the past, the Wii has successfully sold itself as being the gaming console for the entire family and a way to bring family-game nights back into people’s living rooms. Unfortunately, Nintendo opened its doors to the violent video game genre. The National Institute on Media and the Family hopes that Nintendo does not lose sight of its initial audience and continues to offer quality, family-friendly games.
So, is the Wii no longer "family-friendly," as NIMF's statement suggests? No, according to a game database at Nintendo's official website.
Click on the Wii checkbox, and users get a list of 509 games for the console. Of those, only 4% -- 22 games -- are rated Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. According to the database, 75% of Wii games are either rated E for Everyone, EC for Early Childhood or E10+ for Everyone 10 and up.
Readers, will the Wii always run into controversy when allowing Mature games on its platform?

My thoughts reflect what some commenters said - its an M rated game to keep parents in the know that its not good for their little kids. Other games are equally as violent out there, its nothing new. This is just "casuals" thinking that they rule what goes on the Wii. Dont try to nudge out the "core" market. It's been Nintendo's bread and butter for years.
