Forums - Gaming - BAFTA game award results: COD4 3 awards, Super Mario Galaxy surprise GOTY

Don't know if this has already been posted but...

Three Baftas for Call of Duty 4

Super Mario Galaxy was a surprise winner at the Bafta game awards.

Call of Duty 4 took three awards at the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts video game ceremony.

The surprise winner of game of the year, the biggest award, was Super Mario Galaxy.

More surprising was the fact that best-selling title GTA IV went home without any awards - despite being nominated in seven separate categories.

Fifteen video Baftas were on offer, with TV presenters Jonathan Ross and Konnie Huq among those presenting.

Call of Duty - a first-person shooter - took the awards for Gameplay; Story and Character and was picked as the People's Choice.

Of all the other games nominated the only other title to pick up more than one award was Dead Space. It won Best Use of Audio and Best Original Score.

The shock of the ceremony was Super Mario Galaxy being picked as Game of the Year.

British game makers were represented with Codemasters and Lionhead getting awards for their work on Race Driver: Grid and Fable II respectively.

Film director Steven Spielberg won an award for his work on casual game Boom Blox for the Nintendo Wii.

The Video Game Baftas are given out to recognise "the very best in artistic, creative and technical innovation in video games".

Bafta has been giving out awards to the games industry since 1998, although it only became a separate event in 2004.

39 different games were nominated for an award and the event was hosted by Mock The Week compere and stand-up comedian Dara O'Briain, an avid gamer himself who describes his playing habits as "midway between hardcore and casual".

The Academy also bestowed a Fellowship award on Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari and the man who created the first ever mass-market video game, Pong.

The last awards event, in 2007, caused controversy as some of the nominated titles had not actually been released in the shops and, in some cases, were not even finished.

As a result the 2008 ceremony was delayed until March 2009 to avoid clashing with the Golden Joysticks and to give judges more time with the nominated games.

I suppose this event doesn't take release data into account if CoD4 and SMG are included.

Also GTAIV wasn't the best-selling game either, it was 4th (unless you count Wii Sports, in which case 5th)

Edit... wait, this could jst be a wording issue as it doesn't say the best-selling.

I love how Galaxy being the GOTY surprised some people, when the criteria are "the very best in artistic, creative and technical innovation in video games".

Of course it was going to be Galaxy

I'm shocked that Brawl didn't get best audio - that soundtrack is the best a game has ever seen

Wow. Mgs4 didnt even win 1 award? thats kinda messed up too about gta4. i dont like this bafta place...

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

I don't really find anything objectionable in any of those awards.

@ ps3-sales. The thing was judged on

"the very best in artistic, creative and technical innovation in video games".

The BAFTAs don't just hand out GOTY by reading Metacritic

I agree MGS4 shoulda got something

'Surprised' that the highest-rated game of the generation (that's not based on hype) took home the top prize? Nintendo bias confirmed

Also, either Galaxy or Brawl deserved best soundtrack.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

yippee!

Finally some recognition and well deserved for galaxy

What's so surprising about Galaxy taking top honors?

...

Brawl didn't get the award for original score because, well, it's score isn't original. Galaxy was deserving of that award however, and I hope it was nominated in the sound category as well - that aspect of the game is criminally underrated and deserves recognition.
