Forums - Microsoft - What Game Did you Prefer and Why Infinite Undiscovery or The Last Remnant?

I haven't played either, but as a long time Square fan, I'm curious to know.  Also do you agree or disagree with the general critical consensus that these were bad games?

I've yet to finish Last Remnant, but I like it a bit more than Infinite Undiscovery so far. The battle system is cool as hell, and I always enjoy managing a horde soldiers in that SRPG sort of way. Neither game is a worldbeater, but both are fun and certainly not bad.

i only buy exclusives but i enjoyed iu more personally, but if u havent played tov or lo do that first(seeing how namcobandai is discontinuing tov

The Last Remnant. I really like the battle system in that game.

I can't judge the games since I have never played neither one. But from the positive talk I had with Darc Requiem and mrstickball. Both users told me the game is worth the admission and worth checking out. They are both $30 at Gamestop so your not getting beat by the $60 price tag.

On which is better, well the game reviewers accused of The Last Remnant on plague graphics, lock up, glitches and such. And Infinite Undiscovery is kinda sort of like Star Ocean 4 but miles away from the success of Star Ocean 4. I would put The Last Remnant ahead of Infinite Undiscovery if you can look past the faults that reviewers are so proclaiming and if your willing to try a brand new battle system.

Yes, it helps me to get them when they're cheaper. Play magazine said they weren't that bad and had The Last Remnant listed as a game that didn't get a fair shake in 08. Nick Des Barres said 08 was the year the enthusiast press declared war on the jrpg. Is LO $19.99 now? I saw Vesperia cheaper than I expected it to be on ebay yesterday although the limited edition was over one hundred dollars.

360 fans respond: Last Remnant.
360 fanboys respond: Infinite Undiscovery.

Personally, I enjoy Infinite Undiscovery more.

Having bought both at the same time ($50 for both, FTW!), I have begun to attempt to get further on IU (at Velspume Tower), and just reached the 2nd disc on TLR, here are my thoughts:

Of the 2 games, critical reviews put IU well ahead of TLR, as IU managed a low to mid 70's, while TLR had mid 60's. I can honestly say that reviewers do not know what they're talking about, by giving TLR those kinds of scores vs. IU.

Overall, I think TLR is a better game. Visually, TLR is a bit better, with more varied areas, and better level design. The battle system in TLR is top-notch, and one of the shining points of the game. Also, the character models as well as VA and lip-synching (on the US version) is a bit better.

Neither game is awesome, as they're both held back by technical flaws, and a mediocre storyline, as far as I am on both games. However, IU just 'feels' like a mediocre, Enchanted Arms-style ARPG that just never was executed well, whereas TLR feels like a diamond in the rough: awesome game, but has some glaring flaws that make you scratch your head. It's a lot like Eternal Sonata, I think, as a few flaws kept it from being in the upper echelon of JRPGs available.

My scores for the various X360 JRPGs:

Tales of Vesperia: 91
Blue Dragon: 88
Lost Odyssey: 88
Culdcept Saga: 83
The Last Remnant: 78
Eternal Sonata: 78
Infinite Undiscovery: 74
Enchanted Arms: 73
Phantasy Star Universe: 65
Kingdom Under Fire: CoD: 60

Hopefully that gives you a general gist of where I think the X360 library stands. IU is pretty much mediocre on all fronts with a decent combat & synthesis system, whereas TLR was better in every way, except for technical glitches that were woeful. If you get TLR, install it to your HDD, as it will greatly improve your game experience.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I hadn't played them since blockbuster has a VERY limited selection of obscure games (read ALL JRPGs) to rent in their tiny game section. I finally tried hollywood video, and surprisingly they have almost all of them (IU, star ocean, Lost Remnant even weird games I didn't even know existed).

I really wish I hadn't found Infinate Undiscovery. I wish I could undiscover that game forever. At least I got it at a discount so only wasted 5 dollars on the rental but wow is IU ever horrificly bad. I mean I thought Blue Dragon and the like was the low point for JRPGs this gen but I had no idea. IU is Ephemeral Fantasia bad. I mean its like Vagrant Story (in that it has an active battle system and more action oriented combat) but it turns the awesome VS idea into a puddle of raw sewage. It has countless cutscenes with text below the screen where there should CLEARLY be dialogue, it has awkward and/or pointless combat; you can only control the main character other then using a god awful proxy system to control the other characters...I mean I thought the new Star Ocean wasn't quite as good as the old ones but it was at least playable and reasonably entertaining.

I say it without hesitation, IU is the worst JRPG I've played in at least 7 years and is in the competition for worst one ever. It doesn't even look good with awkward animations, poor color and badly designed enviornments. I mean it looks just a shade above a mid range PS2 game, its just horrid. Again Star Ocean looks WAY better (though still not good compared with...say....mass effect).

I can think of nothing redeeming about IU, even with the bad graphics it has slow down, the characters are some of the most annoying I have ever come across especially Crapello...I just couldn't have been more disappointed with Square Enix. I used to be a bit annoyed that IU wasn't coming to the PC or PS3, but not anymore.

As to Last Remnant I might play it on the PC or PS3 where slowdown hopefully won't be as big an issue as most of the reviews made it seem to be on the 360.

Seriously though, I really WANT to like these games, as much as I dislike the 360 I used to LOVE Square. I mean I have probably purchased at least 50 Square games over the years, and thats at the low end. On the Playstation alone I had at least 20 (even the weird ones like Brave Fencer Musashi or however its spelled). The clock continues to run on a Square game thats really worth playing (even Star Ocean, despite being pretty decent, was nowhere near as good as any of the mainline Square PS2 games much less the PS1 or SNES classics).

If you want to RPG on the 360 may I recommend playing Mass Effect 3 times once on each difficulty level (its that good easily), then Eternal Sonata, Tales and Star Ocean (though I would recommend not paying full price for Star Ocean if you can help it, its decent but not OMG I want to pay 60 bucks great, I'm glad I rented it personally)

One last thing, wtf is with all the annoying little kids in these friggin SE games with grating voice work. Lymile almost singlehandedly ruined star ocean for me kay? If I wanted endless autistic commentary from little kids I'd hang out around a middle school kay Edgie?

Is it too much to ask to just make the characters adults of various ages again like in Final Fantasy X? I mean really, every game does NOT need some retarded comic relief character with an annoying voice that has not gone through puberty (IU was even worse where almost every character was an annoying kid, especially Crapello)

You are spot on with the IU/Enchanted Arms comparison.  EA is another great example of a thrown together JRPG thats not really worth anyones time.

If The Last Remnant had its load time and lag flaws removed (IE if someone were to buy the PC version with high end hardware) what would you give it?  Would it rise to a near classic or would it still be in the high 70s with all the technical problems removed?  Want to know whether to get it on the 24th.

I don't know what ES is doing that low relative to Blue Dragon, ES was better in almost every way I thought (then again I never really liked Dragon Ball Z or any of that kind of thing so maybe if you're a fan its better)
