Forums - Gaming - What is with the hostility of PC gamers towards console gamers?

Honestly, I think a lot of it revolves around a person feeling slightly left out. At least in these forums. It's like the console wars, when the Wii people get left out. They get mad because nobody ever says "hey. what about the PC? It's just as good if not better!!" Honestly, when those debates start, I would just try to keep in mind that they're arguing about the PS3 and 360 and not even worry about entering PC gaming into the equation. When it comes down to it, it's about preference. But that might just be my opinion. ;)

The Wii gets left out of the HD war because they don't have games that are comparable to HD console games. Be happy that the Wii stands on it's own. Different audience appeal.

I think PC gamers are pissed because console gamers have been stealing away developers from the PC platform for decades. I know I was annoyed years ago when it seemed that IPs like Deus Ex and Halo were being diverted to consoles and suffering for it.

Nowadays I barely game on PC at all. The platform has practical limitations even if it doesn't have technical ones, and consoles are better positioned to push past limitations in areas like human interface and local multiplayer.

Developers aren't being stolen - they just choose to release games multiplatform because the development costs of big-budget games have risen so much. 10 years ago there were more console games developed than PC games... but now PC has more games coming out than all consoles and handhelds combined.

lol get prepared for a shit storm from the pc fanboys *cough*shio*cough* ;)

On topic, I honestly think its because they feel betrayed by the industry in a sense. Just a few years ago they were king of the gaming world with every high profile 'hardcore' game always debuting on the pc first. Fast forward a few years later and it seems like the focus of a lot of the bigger developers has shifted towards the consoles. I personally know of a pro UT gamer that can't stand UT3 because he says it was made with consoles in mind first and pc's second. Not sure what he means by that since I never played the game but I'm guessing they watered down the gameplay to allow for a more casual friendly aproach.

It also shows why pc gamers usually have such a high hatred of Halo. It started the entire shift that made consoles the home of shooters. And yes consoles have now surpassed pc's in the shooter realm. Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and The Conduit are all a testament to that fact.

Tell your friend to try UT3 Black. The new Titan Patch apparently made it a comeback, and UT3 looks and plays better than ever on PC.

Budget gaming PCs can last over 4 years unlike the original xbox and cost you about $599 unlike the ps3 which you still had to buy HD cables and a second controller. (I know burn for both MS and Sony at the same time, heh)

Are you serious? $599? I have a friend of whom money is no object to him and to build the desired gaming PC it was around $800 for him from buying parts a Tiger Direct. You'll never find a gaming laptop for under $900 as well. Alienware, Dell XPS and more. As you can tell I stopped using a PC and switched to a laptop since I don't game on PC any longer (LOL).

You're out of touch. For around $900 you can definitely get a gaming laptop. It won't have top graphics, but it will be able to play games longer than any console.

Also, I remember in April of last year some guy built a PC for only $500 that could run Crysis on High Settings, better than any console can. So Imagine how much it is to build that now 10 months later.

As I was saying before, I believe Microsoft will bring PC gaming and console gaming together eventually. I believe it will have something to do with Xbox live as well. I dunno why...I just do. PSN will not be able to follow it either. What do you guys think about that aspect of the topic?

If there ever will some sort of merge between PC gaming and Consoles, it will be PC absorbing the consoles, because PC gaming should, right now, be growing faster than Console gaming, and had over 260 millions online PC gamers in end of 2007.

That "merge" is actually happening already, with PC becoming more user-friendly and accessible (without losing features), and consoles are more complex and getting more features (but getting more problems and less accessability). Even some people now consider PC as user-friendly and consoles, due to digital distribution such as Steam and Impulse, which allows you to buy and play any game without having to put discs on the drive, nor needing to go to a game store just to buy the game.

Microsoft has developed Games For Windows - Live, XBL's sister on PC, and so far has failed miserably, which can't seem to even grab extensive support from the major publishers, let alone the smaller ones and indies.

Live hasn't failed at all. The console gaming world will increase in size as this gen goes on. MS is the only entity who I believe right now has the aspiration to meld gaming between the PC experience and the console experience.

I agree.

It's a matter of perspective. Replace "console gamers" with "Windows users", and "PC gamers" with "Mac users", and some people will believe that, too.

I own a PC and a Wii (the planned 360 got vetoed off by my wife). I've been a PC gamer way too long, but I've never looked down on consoles. When my old PCs would break down, or needed some hardware upgrade, I would always yearn for the simplicity of consoles.

With PCs, if yours get (relatively) old, you'd know that your GAME X won't be running the same way as the GAME X being run on your neighbor's newer rig.

On consoles, given that it is on the same console, the game would be the same. So your praise (or complaints) will be much the same with other gamers. With PCs, if runs terrible on you, chances are the game is telling you TO UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM.

Proud member of the Sonic Support Squad.

For the same reason why some HD console gamers hate the Wii.

It means simplification, easier controls, and user-friendliness, for those who do not care so much about gaming.

I don't hate console gamers, I accept that user-friendliness is an important value.
But I hate the ignorant ones who bash the Wii and its games for being "dumbed down", for the "retards", while they also bash PC gaming for being "too expensive" and too "complicated".
It is just ironic.

Also, try to understand our(PC gamers) position:
Imagine, that since the Wii is so successful, almost all publishers will decide to make only multiplatform games, with Wii in their mind first, and release the same game's port for your PS360, but with Wii's graphical abilities, controls that imitate the Wii version, and gameplay fitting for the most casual gamers.
This would include the already existing franchises, like GTA, Resident Evil, GoW, etc.

This is exactly what happened to us.
Crysis is the best-looking PC game since 2007, because no one cared to make anything else for the high-end PC-s quality, we are stuck with the graphics quality of the PS360 ports.
The controls are almost always poorly ported. For example a few days ago, the Prince of Persia tutorials kept telling me to press the red/blue/green/yellow button to proceed. I had to check the control options menu to figure out which one of my 105 buttons I am looking for!
And don't even let me start telling about the gameplay!

that and they fear change to their ways, its teh same reason people blast the wii

Maybe PC gamers are upset that they have to continually spend more money for upgrades and such just to outdo a console? and maybe because they dont get the vast variety of great games that are only on console?

To the pc elitist games like rts and fps cannot ever be duplicated on consoles because of the inherent flaw in said machines control schemes, (though this has been proven wrong with games such as Herzog Zwei and Pikmin representing the rts genre and the Wii remote showing promise for fps control).

Call me a pc elitist if you want, but RTS will never be duplicated on consoles. So developers should even try.

@ Alterego-X

Yeah no-one ever bothers to change the controls to something we can understand. I don't know where the A,B,X or Y button is on my keyboard.

And Prince of Persia is terrible.
