Forums - Gaming - OPM (Official Playstation Mag) UK reviews Lair/Heavenly Sword/Warhawk...

a) This topic isn't about 4d graphics or AAAA games, so lets leave this subjects out of this topic and keep them in topics about AAAA games and 4D graphics.

b) OPMs reviews generrally vary alot, they gave Black a 10/10, for example, whe most other reviewers scored it as slightly above average.

c) Warhawk is looking to be a really good game, and I'm gonna be getting it as soon as possible (I SHOULD be getting enough money tomorrow). What's thr age rating/release date and price for the blu-ray version of the game.

Stof: "Don't you get it guys. Four A's. That's one for each dimension. an AAAA title is a 4D game."

Shouldn't that be DDDD? Maybe that is why SC4 and DMC4 seem to be getting DDDD jubblies.

Leo-j: "Because the ps3 can handle a time based game(were metal rusts etc..), which was demonstrated using ps3 hardware."

Dude, if you PS3 hardware rusts you need to check the humidity in your gaming room ;)

Haw c'mon, Sony's talk about 4D is total and utter bull; either they mean the fourth dimension being time in which case every games ever have that dimension (and 2d games are actually 3d) or they mean a fourth spacial dimension which can be a useful mathematical construct but means squat for a game as our eyes can only perceive 3 spatial dimensions.

Is Sony even still talking about 4D anymore? If not then why do Sony fan[boy]s keep taking it as gospel instead of just ignoring it when people joke about it so as to let it die?

Sorry, every game ever made is 'time-based.'

When we say a game has 15 hours of gameplay, we're talking about time.  Time is required for a sequence of events to actually occur.

All you're talking about is a game which tracks more events than your usual game. The default is tracking the main character's status and position, then any other relevant characters or objects in the immediate area. The game you're describing would also track metallic objects and alter their textures as time progresses. Whether that's in any way actually relevant is subjective, I guess. I know I really wouldn't care if the railing I just jumped over was rusty or not.

LMFAO =) @legend11, that was at PSM that does seem REALLY low for HS, it's been well received by most.

As LAIR n HEVANLY SWORD have got bad ratings from OPM

then THEY MUST BE REALLY BAD

WARHAWK is FANTASTIC, i can vouch for that as I've played on it for 6 hours straight (longer than even Heavenly Sword)

If Heavenly Sword were that bad, it wouldn't have gotten :

Tilt TV : 10 (Finland)
Game Pro :9
Game Daily 8
Doupè : 9 )
PSX Extreme : 9.4 (Poland)
EGM : 8, 8 and 9
Game Informer : 8.75 and 9
1UP : 8

I like how you cherry-picked your reviews, leaving out IGN (7.0), IGN UK (7.0), and Edge (6.0). Obviously there are very mixed emotions about this game. It's not all sunshine and lollipops.

I am content with the scores. They are just trying to get across that these things are more like movies that you play through than games. I have always been looking forward to gaming at this level so it is right up my ally. Ever since I played FFX and MGS2 I have had an deep atatchment to these movie like games, and they are my favorties. I am glad that they have cut the length down in games like GeoW, Gow, HS, and Lair I just don't have the time to play 40 hours on every game. Shortining up games is a good way to pull in the working people, having to put 40+ hour into a game is why a lot of my friends quite playing a lot after graduation. GeoW sold extreamly well to the mainstream crowd because of its shortness and little time consumption.

As for Blu-ray meaning longer games. Yeah it can allow for longer games in some cases, but their are a lot better uses for Blu-ray than stretching a game out for 40 hours. Here are some of the best reason for Blu-ray:
1. Devs can grab in game assets for cut scence and touch them up a little, then play them back in HD while the game loads in the background.
2. Having all of the extra room allows for the devs to have a larger varity of textures making game worlds more varied.
3. Their is plenty of room for uncompressed 7.1 sourround sound. (both HS and Lair do this, and if you have ever heard compressed vs uncompressed sorround, then you would much appricate the differance)
4. A developer never has to wonder if they can fit their vision on the disk, because their is always going to be planty of room.
5. Less processing power is being used to uncompress data and more is placed on making the game play and feel better.
6. Data can be streamed in HD off the disk allowing devs to create larger levels, with more epic feel.
7. Extra content can be thrown on the disk to show how the game use built all the way up to a hole movie.
Their are tons of advantages to developing on Blu-ray, and as the generation pushes forward the devs will get more and more space. By 2010 we will have games in 3d running on 100GB BD disks at 1080p, and their will only be one place to find it, and that will be on the PS3.

Every post from you is gold.

1. What?

2. Larger textures aren't an issue, unless Bluray magically makes the PS3 have more RAM.

3. True, but few people have a sound system that can actually take advantage of this.

4. Too bad they have to worry about the small install base and if their 20mil game will break even. j/k

5. Uncompression occures when the game is loading data, not when its playing. In fact, compressing is an advantage even on Bluray because it reduces load time.

6. Whats the difference between "HD" data and normal data? And I could've sworn GTA did this on the lowly PS2

7. Yeah, you can have lots of extras on one disc instead of two. However, you're on crack if you think games will be on 100gb disc - the PS3 was designed to handle only dual layer, and no firmware update can change this. Oh, and you don't need 100gb to have a "game running in 3d" - look up polygons.

Sieanr, thanks for quoting that post. I missed it while scanning through the thread. I needed a good laugh.

This thread is full of pure comedic gold, I tell ya.

You mean like how in Animal Crossing if you don't play for a week or more all the people in the town ask where you've been and if you don't play for even longer, your house will have bugs in it? Or how in Pokemon, if you login at night, it will be night time? There's even a pokemon you can only get on Fridays.

That's not hard to do using the internal clock.

But it was done on the PS3, so by default it has to be better... Whether or not this can be accomplished on another system is irrelevant.

Fishy joe is getting in my nerves lately, it looks to me he is drunk. Im not talking about an internal clock, its were everything ages.

I can't argue with fanboy logic.

keep it up.

This stuff about things aging can only be provided by Bluray is BS.

The issue with such problems is storing the data about what happens, such as the player chopping down an entire forest only to come ack a while later and find tons of saplings. In this case, an HD would likely be the only thing that has the space to do this, but it wouldn't require the game to be on Bluray since even a CD (or N64 cart ;)) would be enough space for a game to do this.
