Forums - Sales - Why it seems nothing can beat Wii/Ds despite great games/price cuts?

You guys can't really figger this out still heh?
When Wii Sports released, Nintendo had secured the generation. The Wii will keep selling the rest of the generation and there's nothing anyone can do about it. No release will make a sudden comeback for the HD consoles. A game that causes orgasms when you look at the TV screen would not help them now. The people have made up their minds when they played Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit. Those are the games of this generation. Not GTA, not MGS, not FF, not Halo 3, not Gears of War, not SMG, not even Mario Kart Wii.
Look at the WW top 5. Wii Sports is basically there since it came out and you guys ask why the Wii can't stop selling.

Nintendo's R&D. No, they aren't spending all those hundreds of millions on gaming hardware and software research. They're spending it to launch orbital mind control laser satellites into space.

How else to explain why tens of millions of people are buying and playing games with a metascore of 80 or even lower? It's a scientific fact that all of these people would have more fun playing GTA IV or Gears of War, but the lasers are telling them that they want Mario Kart Wii.

....WTF?

sun spots. That caused this whole Nintendomination, sun spots.

It's plausable... sun spots cycle over 11 years.... it has been 11 years since Nintendo were leading.

Here to the next 11, Nintendo dominated years.

It's all about the brand-name now. It's the same with the Ipod - it is one of the worst MP3 players for sound quality on the market and yet it outsells every other brand massively.

Because the Wii is still a new and cool concept to bring to gaming.

Everyone has to try a Wii.I did(didn't purchase one though) and it was pure fun.
However the lack of interesting software has kept me from buying a Wii.

But I'm sure I'll get one in the future.

What the hell is the PS2 doing selling 57,000 units?

Awesome console. Still competing this generation.

Um, because Wii and DS ALSO have great games? The DS has got to have the best gaming library since the SNES.

Uhm, no. And remove that damn bottle from mario's face, it's degrading.

OT: The games on these 2 have wider appeal. That's it.

the wii has great games. wii sports, animal crossing, and mario kart are just a few. i guess it apeals to more people too, and it's cheap. until the other systems get wii sports, then they can't do anything about it.

Its funny since here in Finland Xbox 360 and Ps3 are far more popular thean Wii..PSP seems to also sell more than Ds..I'm not sure why.

I think about 60% of sales come from womans and kids buying it.
I don't see any kid playing Xbox 360 and Wii.
Times has changed.Back in my kid age we had snes first (Megamaaan) then Ps1 (Metal Gear)...Now if parents want to buy console for their kids they get Wii and Ds.
I have played Wii many times (boxing is great) and controls are very good and I'm having fun while playing it and I had Ds few months but its not for me...Played 8 top games than got bored..Well I get DsI when it comes, need to play Crhono cross and Castlevanias...
But I can't figure out why Wii's and Ds's software top 20 is always the same if it has sooo many great games that it can really win against Ps3/Xbox 360..

Take my love, take my land..

It sells more software because it has sold more hardware. No mystery there.

It sells more hardware because it has managed to create an image among a large group that the Ps3 and 360 do not.

No matter how many price cuts the Ps3 and X360 get, they won't manage to put a large dent into that image.

No matter how many new awesome games the Ps3 and X360 get, they won't manage to put a large dent into that image.

50% (just pulling a number out of thin air) of the consoles are sold by image. The company that makes their machine universally accepted first normally win. Hence the "first to 10 mill always win".

The amount of games you need to maintain this image is far smaller than the amount you will need to overtake it. If you want a paralell, take the self-proclaimed "hardcore" market.

Even if the Wii (although this won't happen) started getting over 50% of the major "hardcore" titles in 2010, the "hardcore" would hesitate to purchase a Wii. Their impression of the Wii started as it being kiddy/non-hardcore, and it takes a ton of work to turn it around.

The image/first impression is the reason for most of the Wii's current sales. Why it got that image in the first place is a completely different discussion, and I'd be taking the thread completely off topic by starting on that.
