Forums - Gaming - Is Virtua Fighter a really deep fighting game? (A series question)

I am a fan of the Virtua Fighter series, back to when I saw the original Virtual Fighter it in the arcade (in all its unshaded polygon glory).  I thought the easy to use controls and ringouts were a great change from the usual (and I particularly enjoyed the ringouts).

Well, when discussing fighting games, people talk about how Virtual Fighter is a a REALLY DEEP figthing game.  This is said of the games in the series generally.  I don't see how it is deeper than other fighters though, eventhough I like it.

So, can someone explain how it is really deep?

It really is a complex game, especially for a fighter. But due to all the technicalities to the game, people are discouraged to play it.

If you have VF4: Evolution goto the training mode and try out Akira's reversals, evading-throw escapes, multiple-throw escapes and a few other techniques. The complexity of these moves and their importance to experienced players should reveal why Virtua Fighter is deeper than other fighting games.

I find it interesting that is so, considering how simple the controls are. It only has 3 buttons, right? Punch, kick and guard.

Just curious why a game with such simple controls would deter people and they be discouraged.

My first Virtua Fighter was Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2! Conversely, my last Virtua Fighter was Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2. From what I understand, the game is for seriously hardcore players who go as far as to count frames of animation in their oposition. Way too much for me. The bland characters didn't help. I guess it's more realistic than other fighters, but I prefer Soul Calibur or Street Fighter -Both accessible AND deep.

VF doesnt dabble much in theatrics..u dont get any FMV or cut scenes.. or john woo movie camera angles. But you do get believable characters( sans dural ofcourse), incredible graphics in every installation, balanced gameplay.. i like VF3's background stepping/sloping to be an interesting add on to the series.. something thery removed from part 4.. the only thing i have hated so far is the ancient sound effects/ music they use..

my best VF yet : VF2

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.
