Forums - Microsoft - People are actually buying Halo Wars not knowing that it's a RTS

I was in EB Games today to ask how much they would be selling MadWorld for and was waiting behind a lady. I noticed she was holding a copy of Halo Wars and asking to return it because it wasn't a shooting game like her son thought it was..

I'm not on either side of the fence but it's obvious at least in one case that the Halo name is really selling Halo Wars even if people are unaware that it's a different type of game to the previous Halo's in the franchise.

So my question is this: What other games in history may have also had this effect purely due to brand name?

starcraft ghost would've probably sold a heck of a lot of copies, purely on the starcraft name, even though it was a shooter. Too bad it never came out :(

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I bought it because I thought it was a JRPG, not a piece of shit crammed into an SNES cart.

Dead Space

Honestly, I can't think of that many name brands that jumped ship that weren't obvious (Mario Kart for example of an obvious one). Banjo Kazooie sort of jumped ship, but it is still a platformer

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Can't they simply return it. I find this strange as x360 owners are usually (or like to think they are) hardcore and should be aware of it being a RTS.

If it was a wii game with a massive "casual" base then it would make more sense.

@ justinian: well, buying it off the name "halo" (or any other name) is rather hardcore. Hardcore fan.

back in the day i bought Shadow Hearts thinking its Kingdom Hearts, but guess what? i liked Shadow Hearts better :)

I reckon copies of Halo Wars will be in an abundance in second-hand baskets.

Well isn't that a nice turn of events :) I'm hoping Halo Wars gets more people into RTS games.
