| DaxIthR said: I'm on Chapter 3-3, so I've played through half the game so far and it didn't take me very long at all. Maybe four hours, and I'm a very slow, methodical, search-every-corner type of player. (I might be even farther in given the type of weapons I have at my disposal at this stage.) I've faced three bosses so far, and each of them is HEAVILY inspired by a boss from RE4. I understand when a title in a series wants to pay homage to and recognize its legacy, but when entire set pieces are lifted from one game and dropped into another, you go too far. The core gameplay is so much a retread from RE4 that this title really should have been released 12 to 18 months ago. There's nothing in it that should have had the fans waiting for it this long. I totally agree with the OP's comment about the save system. You never know when you're going to take a step and trigger a cut-scene (and thereby a checkpoint) and lose the opportunity FOREVER of investigating a certain area to pick up treasures, cash and ammo. RE4 was so polished, it would be a massive disappointment if the follow-up disappointed there. So, yes, the controls are sharp. The graphics are sharp. The voice acting is pretty good...but there is enough trademark silliness to ensure we're still playing an RE game. At one point early in the game, Chris finds the key to a certain room and just as he's about to use it, a boss materializes behind him. Instead of using the key, opening and door and locking the boss on the other side and moving on....Chris runs down a branching corridor to fight the boss. The sidekick trend in games is still not perfected. Essentially, the game is meant to be played co-op. Otherwise, you have to manage twice the inventory. Capcom expects you to use Sheva in single player as a mule for carrying around inventory you'll need yourself, which is the reason you can carry so little yourself. It's a distracting chore that breaks the rhythm and pace of the game. Is it better than Dead Space in spite of these flaws, I believe so. Dead Space only had about half a dozen different enemies throughout the game. You could fight virtually everything by standing in a corner sniping it from across the room. There are vast numbers of segments where this works in RE, but there are a number of others as well. I'd give DS a 7 or 7.5 and RE5 an 8 so far. |
Well this saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks for these impressions, I appreciate it =)
About the mood of the game it is definitely different than previous RE games. the biggest difference is the number of enemies. Because you have twice the fire power with a partner the amount of enemies has doubled. This makes the big fights on open ground very confusing. Enemies come from all directions and are hard to keep track of. So it is frightening in the sense that you have to fight your way out of a situation rather than run and find yourself caught between more enemies. Also playing on normal the character takes more damage than previous games. This is because of the buddy system. If you lose all your life you can be revived by a partner. In this state you have a secondary emergency health bar which when depletd means certain death. So you need to heal yourself right away. And the game understands this. There are much more herbs scattered throughout the levels. In this sense the game is more action paced. More health, more enemies, more ammo. But that does not mean it hasnt retained its creepy elements. Some stuff from this game is straight up gory. And the enemies are more realistic than ever. They also take more ammo to take down especially the tougher ones. Head shots and grenade use are very important. Otherwise you can easily be overrun by Manjini (as the zombies are referred to).
A lot of people feel the game has lost its RE feeling but I would disagree. There are not as many puzzle aspects but it is similar to RE4 in many ways. Its definitley worth a playthrough, even if it cant meet everyones expectations.
I would say the mood is quite similar to RE4. The environments look like beefed up version of RE4. Chris sounds like Leon. A minor baddie sounds like that midget.
It's about as close an experience to RE4 as you're going to get with co-op/sidekick gameplay.
I only twice felt overwhelmed by the number of enemies in any battle. Other than that, the number of enemies felt like it was on par with what RE4 pushed. You usually fight groups of 5 to 8 at a time.
nice to hear i'll be getting mine soon
but do the boss battles suffer b/c sheva is there or is she even there wen there are boss battles
i ll be picking up the strategy guide since the save system doesnt allow u to go back to pick up things

Play Me
Thanks for all your info KichiVerde. Now i really cant wait to get this game!
On single player, Sheva makes sure you don't die. Your sidekick is smarter in that regard. When you're dying and need help getting off your knees, Sheva makes you her priority. So, that helps (almost too much) in boss fights.
It's a co-op game first, so Sheva is always there doing something.
The difficulties available at the start are Easy, Normal and Hard. I played Normal and regret it. I've died a few times, but it's too easy. At least, easier than RE4's Normal.
Haven't beaten it yet. I'll post in this thread when I do later today.
