How do you define flop? It lost money? Bad sales? Low scores?

If so, I think IU also fits the bill of no one made money off of it.

How do you know IU lost money ?  The game itself is essentially just a cheap tech demo for the IU graphics engine. The engine development was no doubt expensive, but the cost will be split across several games including SO4. Apart from the graphics engine costs, Radiata Stories was probably more expensive than IU. It's a bigger game with much more content.

Anyway I don't really see your point. Lots of games lose money, and that was true for the previous generation as well. Do you think Radiata Stories and Romancing SaGa made money ?

My point was that it's unreasonable to expect IU and TLR to sell better (or score better) than the previous (PS2) games from the same development teams. Rational people don't suddenly expect an AAA game from a second rate development team.

Nothing is ever certain but it's highly likely that IU lost money. A brand new ip that had three years in the oven and a brand new engine specfically designed for it. The HD graphics, etc are extrememly expensive to produce. And I'd say the first disk of IU cost more than Radiata Stories. I'm going to have to call you crazzy if you think that Radiata cost more than IU.

Both are relatively cheap games for their consoles, but 470k isn't near enough to break even.

And I do think Romancing saga made money. It wasn't a very expensive game and it used sprites.

How did IU have 3 years in the oven? It was announced 2 years before it came out. Also, the engine was NOT developed specifically for IU. It was an engine designed for more than one game, which is why Star Ocean 4 employs the same exact engine, thus saving signficantly on costs.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

good thing we don't all think the same. I've enjoyed Infinite Undiscovery, and The Last Remnant.

I think IU is an alright game, but nothing worth singing any praises for.

I was 2-3 years as it was announced in 2006. So 2006 -> 2008 is three years but it's probably around the ~30-32 month range.

If anyone here really think ms didn`t pay SquareEnix for all the RPG`s, they ARE stupid.
Only one thing makes bad and half bad games like the jrpg`s on 360; Hunger for money.
One of many things to put yer finger on at ms.

Yes they are.

How many people here said that the West was the real Star Ocean market because of the 360 install base in the US and SO3 US sales (740k)??? look at this

SO4 US first-week sales: 60K!!!

Japan is in 185K right now, bringing a total of 245K without Europe (that is the worst market for Star Ocean games)...

Square Enix is really ruining one of its top franchises with this poor decision...

What about the poor performance of the PSP remakes? Did anyone bother to notice that SO4 outsold SO1 and SO2's combined 1st weeks?

How is the 360 running the franchise into the ground with the PSP versions have sold 30k and 15k between both remakes for their first weeks?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Im going to agree with you Euphoria, i think its overtracked. However, it was VERY quick to reach 490k shipped, and as off now, its quite hard to find.

IU hasnt shipped anymore units in Others and Americas, meaning that they did indeed overstuff the supply, but given how quickly TLR shipped 500k and the fact that its still probably selling you can expect it to have a good sell-through.

So what? Both IU and TLR had openings worse and have gone onto sell nicely

@mrstickball

you should not compare remakes to a brand new game.
