Halo's Gone Gold!

Halo 3  for Xbox 360 has gone Gold! That means we delivered a final version to our internal certification group that passed all the tests and is now being whisked away to top secret manufacturing locations to be turned into retail versions of the game – and eventually packaged and sent to stores in various cases, tins and cat-helmets. We can’t wait to share it with you guys on September 25th and 26th, but we have to say thanks.

We have to say thanks to everyone at Bungie who worked so hard to make this the best game we've ever made. We have to say thanks to everyone at Microsoft who helped us make it the best game we ever made. We have to say thanks to our tireless team of artists, designers, engineers, musicians, technicians, writers, directors, producers, thinkers, administrators, ninjas, specialists, gorillas, webmasters and pimps. We’re a family and we made this game for you, our extended family. We hope you like it. Nobody deserves any more recognition than anyone else, but an extra special thanks goes out anyway, to the test team who got it to this stage, in a pool of their own sweat, tears and blood.

And of course, we wouldn't be here today without the tireless devotion of our fan community - we thank you all as well for supporting Bungie Studios in our never ending quest for World Domination and we look forward to sharing another billion+ hours together on Xbox Live when Halo 3 lands in just  a few short weeks.  The wait is almost over.

We Finished our Fight.  Your fight begins in 27 days.

Are you ready?

That's a pretty cool message from Bungie.

So what's holding the game back. Just advertising?

I would assume manufacturing of the disks, packaging, and assembling of the products.

A typical smaller-budget game can take between 7 and 10 days to reach consumers, but that's typically without CEs and the like. Oblivion was around 3 weeks (and shipped around 1.8m units during launch week). So a 4-5 week timetable to produce between 3 and 5m units is expected.

I do wonder if a truck will go "missing" and we see Halo3 copies break street dates on Ebay for $150 for a reg edition.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

If someone breaks the street date on Legendary editions, what will they go for on Ebay? $200? $300?

I read somewhere that microsoft has worked with amazon to eliminate halo legendary resales come launch. Does anyone know if this is true?

Did everyone see this article on testing Halo 3? Impressive.

Leveling the Playing Field
In April, Bungie found a nagging problem with Valhalla, one of Halo 3's multiplayer levels: Player deaths (represented in dark red on this "heat map" of the level) were skewing toward the base on the left, indicating that forces invading from the right had a slight advantage. After reviewing this image, designers tweaked the terrain to give both armies an even chance.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

I don't exactly get what it means when they say it has gone gold? is it like going platinum? Or am I just too tired to understand what the hell is going on :P

oooo...Its gold, Halo 3 is the best damn game going to be release this September!!! WOOHOOO!!!! GO MSOFT!!!

"going gold" means that the final game has been tested, certified, and complete. It means Halo3 is a finished game in terms of production, and the actual Halo3 games are being printed and shipped right now, even though the game comes out in a little less than a month.

When a game goes gold, there's no turning back, as all that matters is actually letting retailers sell their copies once they get them in.

Tell that to Factor 5, who recalled their game to fix online issues after it went gold.
