Goldeneye is the best. Never played Pefect Dark.
(>'.')>

I own both but neither impressed me much to be honest. I wouldn't even call GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark the best Shooters available on a Nintendo system let alone the best FPS's ever.
On topic,
Both were great games. It's hard to call anything the best, when something is freash it seems the best to the majority. The games you go back to and still have just as much fun playing again and again, even years later, are the ones that belong in the best catagory (both games belong there, along with many others)
perfect dark has the better single player campaign, but i wasn't crazy about the multiplayer and some of the goofy alien guns.
goldeneye is still great fun, played it as recently as last year with two friends.

I dunno, my thumbs are pretty mobile. Incremental shifts in direction doesn't bother me all so much. Aiming with c-buttons sucks, the N-64 analog sticks always wear out, it's awkward in your hand, and the button layout is merely mediocre. How can a game be outdated? Easily. (Some) NES games are still fun because of their simplicity. However, as fun as games like Zelda and Metroid are, it's hard not to argue that A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are superior. Why? Because they are essentially the same game, only made more sophisticated by evolving gameplay and improved technology. FPS's are the same way: since the bulk of them do not innovate but instead polish the formula, it's inevitable that subtle gameplay advances and improvements will gradually pile up to the point where older games in the genre feel dated. Golden Eye and Perfect Dark are in fact premier examples of this: games that were stellar in their time but have been slowly rendered obsolete by the grind of progress. One more analogy for you: you cite the (percieved) still-awesomeness of Seven Samurai as evidence that things do not become outdated. Assuming that movies were comporable to games, (they're not), think of it this way: people still watch Toy Story, and it's still a great movie (because of excellent film making, a great script and an engaging narrative), but nobody will laud the animation as top-of-the-line. You'll instead hear "wow, the CGI looks great for 1996!". Same with Golden Eye. Gameplay, like CGi, can be (CAN BE, not inherently is) objectively improved by the increased capacity for growth lent to it by improved technology. |
And you`re only speaking from a technical point of view. You`re out. Next please.
Perfect Dark has more options and variety compared to many FPS's today.
I wouldn't say it was good for it's time only, because the game still has insanely good quality. The Combat Simulator (bot matches) gives the game tons of replay value. I personally think it easily beats plenty of this gen's shooters. Without a doubt, it makes KZ2's bots look horrible.
The only thing outdated about it is the graphics.
yesterday i played both games in multiplayer with new and old friends.pdark frame rate is now a problem in 2009 but goldeneye is as deep as a 3d game can be.also best game ever for the solo missions. n64 joystick is the best ,n64 z trigger is the best but c buttons in 2009 are not the best!
Microsoft needs to put Perfect Dark on XBLA w/ Xbox LIVE 16 player gameplay, and make a Perfect Dark 2 that kicks ass and has a major budget behind it to make Perfect Dark a killer AAA FPS again.
oh.i forgot best games ever because of the zero loading time!!!!
