I think the reason M games seem to appeal to kids more is because of how many of the high budget, great games coming out these days are rated M, not just because its ZOMG VIOLENCE.

Maybe I'm wrong, but none of the people I have ever known get these games simply because they spatter blood and guts around, but because they are fun. If anything thats only ever been a turn-off for most of the gamers I know, though its negligible to them at best.

Then how would you explain the wide appeal of Mortal Kombat back in the day that every kid wanted, especially on the SEGA Gen cause it had blood and gore, Street Fighter II at the time appealed to the more mature gamer who wanted a good arcade fighter, while Mortal Kombat had all the kids gathered around the arcade machines.

Maybe because they found it more FUN then Street Fighter?

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Heh I was one of the few kids that played street fighter, and most of the bragging was about the gore and fatalities not how much fun they had with it, though they may have had more fun ripping peoples heads off though that only confirms that it's appeal was the violence.

There's something I've noticed that I call the Saved By The Bell effect, named after a sitcom about high school that was targeted at preteens.

Whenever a product nominally targets a given age range, it generally seems that the marketers are actually targeting a younger demographic that admires the older demographic. Small children admire preteens, preteens admire teens, and teens admire 20 somethings.

Then on the other hand there's the Cocoon effect, in which adults and kids only admire older people who really want to be teens :)

Let's face it: a serene, self centered approach to life at any age slows down economy. Keep people desiring and striving to be what they are not and you can sell makeup and miniskirts to 8 years old girls and red shiny sports cars to middle aged men :)

I guess you weren't around when the first Splatterhouse, the first Mortal Kombat, or the first GTA came out.

People would argue that the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat was better than the SNES version for what reason?  Better controls?  Graphics?  Features?  No.  One reason only, BLOOD.  They didn't mind that they had half the buttons.

And the first thing I heard about Gears of War was "You get a gun with a chainsaw on it and you can chainsaw people on the ground and it's really gorey and awesome," followed by a "Oh yeah, and it plays better than Halo 3 with this badass cover system."  So it hasn't really changed.  And that's with my same group of friends at different ages.

Right on the money.  And I love the name of this theory.

Whether a game appeals to kids or adults has to do with the content, not the rating.
Of course Grand Theft Auto is more appealing to kids than Wii Fit. What kind of loser kid wants to do yoga?.

Yeah, we get it Max, you don't like God of War. If you think you're too grown up for boobs and gore then maybe you should quit gaming and take up bingo :P

Haha yeah but it's nice to have a little legitimate research.
