Ive just decided my fave RPG music score...

SUIKODEN 2.
Pure epic, filled with a little epic sauce.
The only RPG with music to make actually feel sad.

This is a pretty sad (and awesome) song, also:

As is this one, from Chrono Chross...my personal favorite "sad" song

Holy sh*t that song sounds amazing.

But I still think overall Xenogears takes the crown. Did you not listen to the music i put up?

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot about Chrono Cross. That opening theme is definitely amazing. The thing is, it's clearly imitative of the music from Chrono Trigger. I remember when I first heard the opening theme from it, and thought "wow, that's something I've never heard before -- they just outdid Chrono Trigger at its own music." The individual character themes aren't as consistently good though, and don't manage to give the game the same kind of emotional clarity and structure that Chrono Trigger achieves.

True, but the bulk of the soundtrack is awesome, and all of it just sounds so...awesome, even when the tune is mediocre, that it usually makes up for it. I actually kind of like one nod to CT's soundtrack, where they work in elements of the CT main theme in the main overworld's theme...but in a completely different, Carribeanish style.

I definitely like the nod to Chrono Trigger's music, and I think it's a pretty unique event in JRPG music, when a game manages to draw and build off of elements from an older game, but still manage to find its own style and feel like it isn't a falling-off from the greatness of the first game. (Compared to a series like Final Fantasy, where the musical scores still have their high points like Zanarkand or You're Not Alone, but seem to be getting less consistently great and less important to the game, with each new installment).

Despite the fact that I only played Chrono Cross for the first time a few years ago, I still put the game in my PS2 every once in a while just to hear the opening music. So I'm with you on that one : )

I've played Xenogears (twice); I'd rank it as my 5th maybe 6th best RPG soundtrack. I've played pretty much any RPG you think of, too.

It depends entirely on what you're looking for.

A capable argument could be made for Mother 2 or Mother 3, depending on taste.

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is also exquisite, and criminally underappreciated.

We should just change this thread to one where we post random awesome songs from RPG's.

Here's another great one that a lot of you have probably never heard:
