i think they confirmed that the 3 new characters are playable. in fact i think they said that the 3 new characters will be playable in the demo. and if you see the last trailer you can see them fighting in the battles.

I'm making a prediction: I'm getting a Vicks/Wedge vibe from these characters. Not that those will be their names, but I think they'll be the characters who fill out your party early on before they get left behind/ killed off. Which is a shame. I definitely like the girl's design. But as others have said, the fact that they don't have a weapon which makes them unique is a pretty sure indicator. There's also the fact that we know the game goes beyond the city and out into the wilderness, similar to FFVII -- it would be unusual to have all of the major characters introduced before leaving the city.

Personally I think Square is just hyping the demo and all of the characters in it as if it were its own game. They probably figure they might as well, since everyone is going to see the demo in a couple months anyway. But like most Final Fantasies, what will hopefully make the full game special will be that feeling of expansiveness and discovery once the world starts to open up. Oh well -- we'll see.

Umm, I think is playable. However I'm not positive as none of us have played it.
