Best: GC

Worst: Sidewinder-PC

Around the Network

The Good: Dual Shock (DS2 being the best ever), 360, GameCube, Saturn (both controllers), Genesis, SNES, Master System, NES and 2600 joystick

The Bad: SixAxis, 2nd Xbox, Dreamcast and WiiMote (Motion Plus had better be a big improvement)

The Ugly: N64, 5200 (worst controller ever), ColecoVision, InteliVision and Xbox Duke controllers

i hated the n64 design.
felt so awkward

Gamecube-- just an all around awesome controller. It was odd but accessing each button was super easy and natural. The only downside was that it didn't have four triggers.

XBox 360-- Huge improvement over the original Xbox controller because of the size alone. It does have the worst d-pad in the history of controllers but luckily not a lot of games need an accurate D-Pad anymore. The goods are the analog stick placement, weight, size, and the triggers are the best around.

SIXAXIS-- About the only good thing about this controller was the D-Pad. SIXAXIS tilt controler is nearly worthless, it feels like a cheap toy due to the weight, it has no rumble, and the triggers are terrible.

N64-- Interesting design but not at all comfortable or convenient.

This is correct.

Is there any logic or reasoning other than brand name?

That site traces all the controllers

From the classic era, the Intellivision and Atari 5200 controllers are considered the worst by most. The Intellivision's design was clunky and the buttons on the side were awkward. The Atari 5200 controller was known to break when NOT being used, when being used, or anytime in between. The original Atari 7800 Power Sticks were also very painful for long continual use (the pads sold with the system in Europe were much better).

From the classic/neo-classic era, my favorite was the Epyx 500XJ. It was an ergonomic, fit-in-the-hand controller. There was even a version for the NES. http://www.vintagecomputing.com/index.php/archives/131

From the current period, I like the GC and Wii. I find the N64 effective, but also confusing and prone to failure. The others are "all right" -- though I will say I used Logitech wireless third-party controllers from my PS2 and Xbox.

(Now with signature in my sig)

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

from the ones i have used or from the ones in general?

from the ones i have used
Best : Daulshock 3 (Daulshock always feel right to me)
Worst: N64 / Xbox

from the ones i didnt use.
Worst : Jaguar controller / CD-I

idk why Microsoft decided to make their qwerty keypad for the 360 to look like the Jaguar one, its lame

I think that's more a personal taste matter than anything else.

Personally:

Bests: SNES, Gamecube, Wii

Worsts: Dual Shock (any version), Xbox (anyone)
