I'm talking about the amount of people actually purchasing games on the PS3 man. It's really not that hard to figure out what i'm saying.

So only 5-6M PS3 owners buy games for it...

Many point out how the PS3 has sold better than the 360 in comparable months from release, but the software sales have fallen short iirc.
Its probably been said here plenty of times, but the 360 just has more hardcore gamers. That's it.

I'd say yes to that.
Sony has much more first party games than MS, and most of them sold pretty well, like uncharted, resistance, motorstorm etc etc

Nice generalization. I know many people here that have PS3s. I would agree with you in 2007, but not now. Status symbol has very little to do with it. Some people actually enjoy the games that are on the PS3, without thinking about what is the "cool and popular" thing. I know, it's hard to believe.
On topic.
Hype in forums/gaming communities/among fanboys DOES NOT mean hype for the rest of the world. That's where Sony has a problem. The first/second party development as far as quality is where it needs to be. Marketing isn't.
On an anecdotal note (and this is just anecdotal), most PS3 gamers I talk to IRL don't have one game they all like. With the 360 owners, it's Halo and Gears that they like the most almost without out exception. The only exceptions being the two 360 owners I knew from Japan.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

TO be fair, it doesn't sell a lot of JRPGs. Western RPGs seem to be experiencing a fair degree of success (i.e. Mass Effect)

I don't think the Mass Effect franchise will be surpassed by any RPG this gen. Actually...no JRPG will beat it for that matter.
