Forums - Gaming - What Format do you Think the Next-Gen Consoles will use?

I believe that at least one console next gen won't use discs at all; it will be download-only. I don't claim to know which one that will be, however; you can make arguments for all three.

I also expect that this console will lose. Too many consumers will understand what a horrible deal download-only is for them, despite the heavy marketing which will undoubtedly ensue.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Blue ray for the next ps3 and 360 don't know about the next wii but i wouldnt be surprised to C them use it either

Nintendo- Proprietary based off blu-ray or some other format larger than dvd.
Sony- Blu-Ray
Microsoft- Most likely blu-ray but could use some other format.

PS3 will probably use Quadlayer Bluray discs, the Wii2 might opt for DVD9s or a proprietary disc. 720 will most likely also use Bluray.

Sony - Blu-ray
Nintendo - Proprietary format for Blu-ray

Microsoft - Blu-ray. The only reason they wouldn't is if they have an "image" problem by using a format that many people think is owned by Sony (if you do your research, they don't own even 50%).

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Blu-ray for pretty much all, unless they don't manage to get more layers working at a decent price. That is, they might have to put in more space if this gen is going to last long. That, of course, depends on the hardware, and current BDs are probably enough if next-gen console won't have significantly better hardware. Anyway, BDs have a lot of potential when they have several layers - 200 GB (done already, I believe) ought to be mostly enough.

And not using much better hardware wouldn't be because of Wii - it would be because of ridiculously high development costs.

Digital Downloading will not be anyone's primary means of media if they want to reach the broadest possible market (which they will want to do now that the PS2 has shown the way), reliable broadband, especially in America, is either way too expensive or far too slow (or both). To be able to download something like, say, Mass Effect would be infeasible for a lot of people out there

Blu-Ray (or a Blu-Ray knockoff in Nintendo's case), will be the standard de jure.

fixed

If PS2 showed the way, it showed the way to Nintendo, and not as much to Sony

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Most likely Blu-Ray or a new HD Format.

I think sony will continue with the blue ray while nintendo wil probably use some modified version of the HDDVD like with the moded DVD disc they're using with the wii. as for MS im sure they'le use the HDDVD still but using more layers.

Sony will for sure be using Blu-Ray on the PS4

Nintendo, I think will go towards using HD-DVD's. Blu Ray has been on the market for like 3 years and even though the price of a blu ray player is dropping, I dont Nintendo will try to sell a new system with Blu Ray cause it could make the system expensive for customers. Nintendo strikes me as a company who always offer great or afforable prices on systems. It could be cheaper to develop a console around a format that has died out from being a huge media format sold in stores. What the price of an HD-DVD player anyways? 90 bucks? Amazon has been selling the 360 HD-DVD drive for about $90.

Microsoft: They would be stupid to not go with HD-DVD. I dont think HD-DVD will be used in the Xbox 3 cause Microsoft doesnt have faith in HD-DVD. They looked at HD-DVD as just for media and it failed. I dont think Microsoft will look at HD-DVD as a storage for gaming. Something tells me they are going the digital route on the Xbox 3.
