And to think I very nearly went through life without reading this thread.
Rol's recent expansion into serious threads has found fertile soil indeed. The best part is that it may even breathe new life into his joke threads, because once again we will not be initially sure whether his thread is a joke, instead of being certain it is before we even read anything.
It makes perfect sense.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia. Thanks WordsofWisdom!
No Name are you the best poster in history or what? But if I recall correctly you like Wii Music so you get deducted 1 point for that.

If you know about something its generally because its been successful. Think about the games which don't get released, or get released to such a low fanfare that no-one cares about them. Those are the games which lose the money for the publishers. |
Not true.
Only 20% of released video games make a profit. If you include cancelled projects, then only 4% of video games are profitable.

Or maybe its because people will still buy the games they put out on the Wii even when they put their third string developers on the project? Even Nintendo has gotten away with it on games like Mario Party.
Why put good developers on a game when people will buy it regardless of how well it is developed? Its not cost efficient. Not to mention your talented developers will be even more talented, particularly when the next generation comes around, when they are working on more advanced hardware technology rather than less advanced hardware.

^ Because a first string developer is likely going to create a better selling title. And, given that the Wii is cheaper to develop for, a high quality title there is probably going to generate a greater profit than on the HD consoles (in general). EDIT: Furthermore, since the of the Wii controller (and the subsequent attemps to incorporate motion in control in other consoles) indicates that motion control will be very large factor in the next-gen, so that would give incentive in that area for developers to get experienced with motion control.
Okami
To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made. I won't open my unworthy mouth.

Ah ha ha ha, what an awesome conclusion. Out of curiosity, what possible outcome could lead to the Wii getting better games?
1) The Wii sells a lot of software: clearly this means that Wii owners love the terrible games they're being given. Why give them anything better?
2) The Wii does not sell software: clearly this means Wii owners do not buy games. You can bet that third parties would abandon the system entirely if this were to happen. Obviously if the games stop selling, support will dwindle.
Therefore, there is no possible outcome that could reasonably lead to the Wii getting better games, using your logic. The options are either 1) get more crap or 2) get nothing at all.

I think we are starting to see a clear shift towards more game development for the Wii (about two years after people said it was going to happen, so about damn time if you ask me), but what I say still holds true.
What games are selling buttloads on the Wii? Not games like No More Heroes, or Zack and Wiki, or even Call of Duty 5. Carnival Games has sold more than all three of those games combined. Mario and Sonic at the Olympics has out done them by a much larger margin. The only "traditional" games (barring some exceptions of course) that have sold phenomenally well on the Wii are made by Nintendo.
The third-party games that people are buying on Wii are not games like Gears of War, or Metal Gear Solid, or even your EA sports games for that matter. The games people keep buying are not the kind that take the same level of development skill at least in terms of what is normally expected from a game like Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, etc. The end user expects something completely different than that.
The Wii is a unique market unlike any other console before. That is its strongest advantage and its ultimate curse.
