Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo drop the price?

No, the Blue Ocean Strategy involves non-competition over the core market. Responding to the competition with a price cut doesn't work with that strategy, and it certainly doesn't make sense just to try to sell better to a certain sect of consumers when the damn thing is selling really well.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

i keep seeing people saying things similiar to  "wii needs a pricecut to sell better", or more specifically "wii needs a price cut in Japan".

Supply and demand is all I need to say.  Regardless of what microsoft has done with arcade model of the 360, if the Wii still outsells it week after week and they need to keep the production up, where is the reason to drop the price?  Just to give the people that are going to buy it next week and beyond a discount because why the heck not?  Makes no sense, the demand is there so you supply it and get the good price for it.

As far as Japan is concerned, It seems to me that people believe Japan as one lone country should be expected to compete with all of the Eur. or NA sales.  It makes no sense to do so.  After 2 years 3 months since release, a single country is still selling 20k units/week consistantly...and its a country where consoles are secondary to handheld portable devices.  Thats just where they are at...on the go, not sitting in their living rooms for hours upon hours.

What I'm getting at, is that I don't see a viable reason for a price drop yet, or maybe not anytime soon.  The question I have is...will they bring out new colors to keep excitement up and stay at the current pricing...or will they wait till demand drops, reduce the price and release colors to keep the sales up and the units flowing.

For most people, when I mentioned a price cut, I actually meant a price cut all around. I didn't just mean Japan and maybe we could  leave Japan out of this. It needs a price cut there for different reasons.

@Demotruk:

The wii will succeed on the blue ocean market. There is no doubt about it. But there is no reason to forget the non-purely casual market just because it is not needed. I don't think vgc wii owners are the purely casual crowd. So shouldn't we care that non-purely casual gamers like us are also well represented so that we get more of these games? I don't think we will keep getting them if they are not selling and there are good non-casual games that are not selling on the wii.

The demand will be there because of the new crowd of gamers it is attracting. But my point is that Nintendo says they are going for all markets, not just the new crowd of wii fit and wii sport gamers. They might not be going after the non-casual gamer and there is no good way to tell who is buying the console. One way is by the sales of non-casual games.

Some really good non-casual games are going to be released this year. I'm actually curious about how they sell. If they don't sell well, it could be that the Wii userbase is not well represented by non-purely casual gamers. These gamers can go to the 360 as an alternative and the Wii would not be so well represented in this market, even though the wii is selling like crazy.

The thing is, the price is ok for the wii fit/sports gamer because they only want a wii. There is nothing else that comes even close to it. There will be no interest in the 360 or the ps3. These guys will buys wiis like there is no tomorrow and the price is quite accessible. They might not be buying madworld or muramasa though.

no they dont the wii will sell like hot cakes until the novelty wears off on the casual crowd but wii sports is making that seem very unlikely. Nintendo dosnt need to drop the price because their games and the system are selling like mad. THey are getting huge amounts of money. They dont care so much about 3rd party because they dont need to they will continue to make billions and if the 3rd partys dont make that kind of money whats it to nintendo theyre making their money and thats what they care about. In fact i bet they wouldve INCREASED the launch price of the console if they knew it was gonna do this well

This was the reason Nintendo went downhill before. Is it a good idea for them to do that again?

I believe that in Japan they need to drop the price significantly. A 5,000¥ drop would help quite a bit.

It don't need a pricecut in Japan.

It need games.

Isn't it actually the opposite? they cared too much about 3rd parties last 2 gens(meaning they demanded way too much from their games)
