Forums - Microsoft - Elite costs stores $6 more than it's price...

the sad thing about the ps2 is that the gamecube dropped to $100 what? 3 years ago? The GC is a more powerful console and i dont' know it for a fact but Nintendo doesn't drop the price unless they are basically breaking even or making money already.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

So Sony still makes $7 off each PS2 sold and they make a profit off the PS3 80GB with game? since they sell it to stores for $485. That means up to $17 profit each sold and $1 and up for the store. Interesting.

No not really SSJ12. The PS2 doesn't cost Sony $122 to make. They just sell it to retailers for that much. It probably cost them $100 or less to make the PS2. Same thing with the PS3, except it costs Sony more to manufacture PS3's than they are charging retailers. Also if this is true, MS is screwing retailers big time on the Elite.

Sony makes $7 profit off ever PS2, thats officially known. They dont make $100+ off of them, if they did they would have dropped the price down to $50 by now.

Where did I say Sony made $100 off the PS2. I said it probably cost them that much to make one. Sony only makes $7 off the PS2? So after all this time, it still cost them $115 to manufacture!?

Is is possible that your company hasn't updated the Elites to the new costs yet? That $455 price could be a holdover from when the Elites retailed for $479.

And how is that $7 profit officially known? I haven't seen any number quoted for the PS2 in quite some time.

well thats the suspected number, every price drop keeps them holding a steady $7 profit off each console. Thats been stated for years though.. it might have been started back in 2002? But thats the number that people suspect that Sony has stuck with since the first or second price drop, and Sony did announce when they started making a profit on the PS2 back then (no idea if theres a link to the subject matter).

Even some analysts just believe that it will stay at $7 till the console is below $99. So figure till the, well December apparently, 100k sold times $7 = $700k profit.

I still don't understand where you're pulling that $7 number from. Are you talking about retailer profit (eg. Sony charges a retailer $122 for PS2, which the retailer then turns around and sells for $129)? If so, the retailer gets the $7, not Sony. It could cost Sony $45 or $147 to make that PS2 that they sell to retailers for $122, the $7 has nothing to do with them.

Sorry if I'm being obtuse but I don't understand where you're getting that number.

The PS2 costs Sony $115 for Sony to make, they charge retailers $122, so they get $7 per console sold to retailers. The PS2 is being sold at retailers for $129.99 which means that retailers are making $7 profit off the PS2, and of course all the sales tax goes to the government.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the prices he quoted.
