Italian Soccer will test out the Orange Card in it's league according to an article from Spain's 20minutos.es

The Orange card will actually expel the player for a few minutes off the field giving the opposing team a momentary advantage. Something similar to Hockey.
Pierluigi Collina, who some of you may remember a few years back as the bald ref who was considered the best in the world, and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), organization within FIFA that regulates the rules of this sport will study implementing this rule this coming February 28 in Manchester.
The idea was brought on by the Northern Ireland Federation who set out to find a solution for infractions where the red card would be too severe and the yellow too weak of a punishment.
The Italian League is also looking into the possibility of the double Referee. Italians seem willing to try anything.

I'm not too sure about this, specially as the article doesn't state which are those fouls, but I can't think of many fouls that would deserve more than a yellow and less than a red, except for professional fouls. I mean, if a foul is bad enough, you get a red card, no need to get an "orange".

What do you think about this? It works well in rugby, but then again, there's no booking, yellow card means 10 mins out directly.

I think they're desperate to invent something new

Why bother with orange? Why not go with 10 mins sin bin for a yellow and sent off for a red, as used in rugby?

I agree, I could understand that rule (it would need some refiniment and testing, but I think it could work), but 3 different card is almost ridiculous

I would just go with what mistershine says. The yellow card will give them a time out to calm down, but if it is worth of a red, or a second yellow, they just have to go.

I have also seen that in the Vatican they are checking out a blue card, which does the same thing

I don't think that is the answer, 2 referees would be far more useful

I think it'd be far too complicated, I mean, what would happen if one saw it was a penalty and the other saw the player dived? How would they settle that?

The other, more interesting idea is to do away with refs and cards and let them get on with it. Kind of like a rollerball type game.

And now I will take my leave as I don't even like football and feel sullied having spoken about it.

I don't think it's a good idea. They simply should put the player that receive a yellow card out for a few minutes. Not 10, cause that's a little too much IMO, but 5-6 minutes, why not!

I dunno.. I can recall situations where I was on the fence between red and yellow. my question is though, does the orange booking continue to stand after the player returns?

So, if after an orange card you get a yellow or second orange, does that make a red card?

I suppose it would be the most logical thing. I can't confirm it, but I'm pretty sure that would be the case
