Louie, let me quote what certain developer on GA said about it:

'I confirm, but it's not exactly PSP2, just an upgrade.'

Hm even more hints... nice find. That would actually sound like a good idea I think.

Yeah, looks like it's only PSP-4000.

However, according to this respectable JP site ( http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2009/0226/kaigai492.htm )  -  PSP2  is in development, and will feature much  more memory AND will be DD only.

Maybe something like the transition from Gameboy to Gameboy Color. So the PSP could still play 90% of the PSP 4000 games but after a year or so Sony starts releasing games that are download only.

Well, according to the article itself, although the jump in power between PSP and PSP2 won't be like PS2/PS3, it will still be substantial (PSP1.5). Also, the article talks about emphasis on DD content, BUT apparently you will still be able to purchase software in conventional way ( no UMD was mentioned - probably through mem sticks).

So I think both PSP-4000 and PSP-2 are coming - PSP-4000 this year and PSP2 sometime in the future. Article speculates Sony probably haven't even finished the PSP2 design yet.

That's what I originally thought as well. It's just that there are so many hints and rumours about the PSP 2 that it doesn't sound like its launch is that far away. It sounds like the "PSP 2" will launch in 2010 and not later. And Sony just announced a huge line-up for the PSP. I doubt they'd push the system for a single year. So maybe they are indeed the same product and Sony is just tweaking the design and such things.

I hope Sony releases a PSP without UMD drive, because it means they will have to bring the entire PSP library online.

I hope the next PSP released will be a 'next-gen' model (DS->DSi), and not just a new PSP. This way, it should still be able to play all the PSP games, but at the same time, I wont be buying a PSP just before the PSP2 is released...

Louie, look what I just found on Eurogamer - it's almost a carbon copy of my prediction:

"Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor - a PSP2, if you like - later.

Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year's update, which will presumably follow this year's PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007."

Even fewer details were available on the PSP successor, but we're told that developers are already working on games.

PSP 2 or PSP 4000 I really hope that Sony finds a way that we can all keep playing the games that we already have. The strong game line up for 2009 in indicative that such will be. Also, can Sony risk losing the PSP install base that it has when coming out with a new product? It would be great if any game coming out for the new system would work with the older psp's. The only real problem that I forsee with that would be the addition of new controls on the newer psp model. I know that we could certainly use a right analogue input for shooters and such.

I've read that on gamefront as well some days ago I think. It's just that each PSP 2 rumour says developers are working on the games for it already so it seems to be really deep in development already. Hm gonna be interesting to see. I'd rather like the PSP 2 not launching earlier than 2011 if they want to release a PSP 4000 at the end of 2009.

Releasing a new model for Christmas this year and then dropping the consoles alltogether just one year later... dunno, doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Well, that screws my post over xP

Hopefully, if the PSP2 is indeed in development, PSP-4000 might bring a slight pricecut with it.

Sony has already started releasing PSP games onto the PSN for download. I believe that the PSP-4000 and PSP2 are different machines altogether.

The PSP-4000 probably wont be anything more then a similar upgrade as the PSP-3000 was. Pretty much a manufacturing cost cutting upgrade.

The PSP2 wont be out till next year and will fix a ton of issues that the PSP had, like adding a second control nub.

Sony just announced a ton of new games, and there are allegedly some big PSP games still unannounced - Jak and Daxter, Gran Turismo, Killzone Liberation 2 (confirmed in the latest UP mag).

Also, PSP has a huge list of announced games for Japan as well, including the brand new Monster Hunter Capcom announced in new Famitsu.

Somehow I don't think we'll see the real successor before 2011 - at the earliest.

Well, let's hope. I'd really like to see a PSP that can play download games, though. I'd even buy a PSP 4000 but only if the successor is still far away.
