As others said, this includes the PS3, PSP, anyone with multiple accounts all of which are counted, and anyone who signed up on the Playstation website and doesn't even own a PS3.

That's like comparing 20 million in their "network" to Windows LIVE + Xbox Live + Xbox.com + Games for Windows, etc. etc.
Pretty sure if we did this the Xbox "network" would be much MUCH larger.

Hmmm that post makes absolute sense sinse Microsoft said half the Xbox live accounts are gold, so if we go by VG Chartz that would be 14 million accounts that are paying 50$ a year, not 20 million.

Edit: also the article I just read said there are 17 million active account in Xbox live, so sisne half the users are gold then that means theres 8.6 million in total that pay $50 a year.

Oh!!  I never realized it till you wrote "active accounts"

Check the wording for both press releases

- Sony says "Registered"
- MS says "Active"

Vgchartz has 37,000 "registered" accounts.. but how many of those are actually active?

Ahh, but remember that PSN sux balls compared to XBL.... this makes it harder for Sony.. but despite this huge problem, they still managed to rachet up a respectable 97.3% tie ratio for PSN accounts to PS3s sold. I know this isn't a very good ratio, but what can you expect from the PSN?

But remember those accounts are free, and you can make unlimited of them.  And there are only 20 million PS3's sold... not 25 million.  So, considering those accounts are not all PS3 users, and include PSP, multiple accounts, and even people just registered on Playstation.com, it really isn't anywhere near that many unique users on the PS3 PSN.
