Indeed.
starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS
1) God of War came first.
2) God of War got better reviews than Gears of War (well, from IGN at least, 9.8 vs. 9.4)
3) God of War is awesome.
4) ???
5) Profit! And also GoW is God of War.

lol nice joke post.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
The real GoW = http://www.gunnersofwar.com/
2001! Um, but really that's just a gaming clan that I've been in since forfreakinever. I honestly will always see GOW as God of War.
| perpride said: @Khuutra - I already presented by stance towards google being used in this argument. It is completely moot. Gears came out two months ago. Wait till God of War comes out and re-test the theory. Type GOW into wikipedia. The first thing you see is a 1939 novel called Grapes of Wrath. Second is GOW. The third is Gears. Also, type in MK in google...the first that has to do with games is Mortal Kombat. Also, I was not referring to you when I said that the reason for this discussion is 360 fans. @Onyxmeth - nice tag. Why do you have to come into a perfectly decent argument and stomp all over? I was actually quite enjoying this disscussion, but will not return to this thread because I don't need the hate. Peace and love to you all, use the damn acronym for whatever you want... Gears, a shooter - which is the reason people like me prefer it, sells much better than God of War...YAY. |
Fine. Let me be...nice.
1. It's not an acronym at all. No one goes around saying "GOW" (pronounced like the word cow) all day long. If you were to actually sound it out, which would be idiotic since it takes longer than actually saying the names of each game, you would spell out each letter, making it an initialism, not an acronym. An acronym would be pronounced like the word it is spelling. Also GEOW would be a psuedoblend, not an acronym or an initialism because you are using two letters from the same word to create it.
NBA, MLB, NAACP=initialisms
SUNY(State University of New York) pronounced as "sue-knee"=acronym
Sonar, Radar=psuedoblends
2. Neither company has trademarked the intialism "GOW", so anyone can use it for whatever means they want. There is no unwritten law in intialisms, acronyms and psuedoblends that says it's "first come first serve". If somebody trademarks it, then it could become that, but only by the other company. Nothing can stop people using it however they see fit. However, if we were to go by the notion that it was first come first serve, then the initialism would default to the novel the Grapes of Wrath, because it came first and it's more popular.
3. If God of War is "GOW" and Gears of War is "GEOW" then what is Geometry Wars? GEOMW? If people were responsible typers then all three should be able to share the same initialism "GOW" because like how it's properly done for little known intialisms, the name will be spelt out once to avoid confusion in the first place.
4. They argued this same stupidity over in the System Wars forum on Gamespot. Yes, that trash bag, festering forum on Gamespot. If that doesn't tell you something about this topic then nothing will.
5. This a joke thread.

| windbane said: yeah, starcraft, it's all a joke. The guy uses sales numbers to "prove" which game is better all the time. That's no joke. |
Yep, games which sell more are better sellers. Im glad we agree!
Tease.

Type "GOW" into google. Not only is the first result the official Gears of War page, every single video game-related result on the first page is for Gears of War.
