Forums - Microsoft - No Mass Effect in Japan?

Not enough mechs, massive cartoon boobs and whiny voices, it'd never sell in Japan!

When is ME 2 coming out anyway and is there some kinda timed exclusive deal this around too?

Considering the type of gamers that the 360 is owned by in Japan, I don't see why it couldn't.  If Oblivion and even Halo 3 have an audience in Japan, then it would be likely that ME would also have that audience.

@ Mummelmann That's what I was getting at, just a quick play through the main story without the tedium of exploring in the mako and doing repetitive sidequests. It's much more enjoyable that way.

Oh, okay. Yeah, I think I'll do that then!

exactly m$ announced it for japan.they dont have the rights to it anymore do they?

Yeah. MS published ME and still retains rights as the publisher, though ME is in the EA stable now. Shoot, EA has to ask MS to publish ME on the PC. Google it - and you'll see that EA and MS 'struck an agreement' to let EA publish future ME titles.

Trust me, that agreement MS struck means ME won't be on the PS3 for a long, long time, if ever. I am thinking when the contract involving publishing rights expires, but even then, it will be a very, very old game - maybe a few customers, but not a lot.

According to Bioware, it's 360 first and then PC after. But that was some months ago. I'd expect EA to do a simultaneous release.

Okay, I think I have a problem though; I uninstalled ME and removed the savegames for space and now it turns out I'll need them for ME 2... I don't think I want to play through this game again just so I can play number 2...

Just do what I plan on doing, and replay it right before you play ME2.  That way everything will be fresh in your head, and the time density of awesome will be through the roof!

Well, that's kinda the problem, I didn't really find it that awesome, hoping for a better sequel! A very good RPG but there were too many things that annoyed me for full enjoyment. I might just hop through the main story (won't take long anyway) to get the saves I need though, levels and stuff probably don't matter.

ME not awesome? Owning fools all over the galaxy, intimidating clowns, giving the finger to the galactic council, telling the Reapers to 'Eat me,' the ability to have a threesome and - my personal favorite - talk a fellow Spectre into killing himself - makes this game the absolute BOMB.

Trust me - I'm not an addict. However, I have played this game through 3 times and working on my 4th playthrough. This game is some kinda awesome.

The story, characters and dialogue are all kick ass and the shootouts are mostly good fun but I feel that the sidequests are way too repetetive and bland, almost every single base (and even dig sites underground) you visit is the exact same to the point where you actually know exactly where all the enemies will be standing as soon as you glance on the map. The driving is horrible, control wise and the driving levels aren't challenging imo. The squad is more a hassle than help sometimes and the endless elevator rides and loooooooong hallways you run (very slowly) through get extremely tiresome after many hours. Also, I feel that the game was too short, I spent around 35 hours (same as I did on Fallout 3) on the main story and probably around 85-90% of the sidequests where I was expecting twice that and then some going by previews and hearsay. The controls (PC version) are frustrating, especially the cover, there should be a button to activate cover, I found myself annoyed at my character jumping at the wall when I was simply trying to walk close to it (likewise, it can be hard to get into cover when the cover is low and some walls are tricky to hit right) and the camera changed and I had to turn and walk away from the wall and the camera changes again.

There were also a few bugs; sometimes I would exit the vehicle and press an entrance console only to find that my crew was still in the Mako when I had entered the building and I cannot walk, which then prompted a reload. There was also the problem with overheating, many times when my assault rifle overheated and I switched to sniper or shotgun, I found that those had overheated as well despite me not using them. It was also the same when the sniper overheated or the shotgun but it never happened to the pistol (in my last fight with Saren three of my weapons locked up because I overheated the sniper rifle and I was left with only the pistol to fight him with). The worst part about this particular bug is that the heat sinks don't work properly and the weapons stay overheated until you load your game.

All in all, the entire game bears many features and problems that clearly show that it was a console title to begin with and that is rarely good in my book on a PC game. The inventory limit felt somewhat arbitrary and the visuals were in many places horrible (yes; horrible), the flare effects on objects and lights in the distance makes things look like PS2 quality textures and some of the characters looked incredibly bad while others are photo realistic. There was one cutscene (on the beach before you enter the breeding facility and meet Saren) where the camera zooms in on Sheppard's feet and you can see that the textures are incredibly low res and look like something of the 90's (you don't see the feet normally but come on!).

There are lots of systems and planets in the galaxy but only a tiny percentage where you can actually land and explore. Even on the planets you can explore, there is nothing but flat fields and some rises and mountain areas and the occassional rubble to find along with some beacons and stuff. Overall, exploring most planets takes around 10-12 minutes so I never got the feel of being in a truly huge and epic game. Having so few destinations among so many clusters, systems and planets was frustrating and I was very let down when I realized that 95% of the planets were simply there either for a survey or for nothing at all.

By all means, I did like the game but with the amount of issues it has (few of which were ever mentioned in reviews for some reason) it could never reach the summit for me. Personally, I'd give it an 8 or so and even that is pushing it. Like many RPG and Bioware fans I wanted to love it and be hypnotized by yet another massive and epic adventure but the faults got in my way and somewhat ruined the overall experience for me in the end. I do hope and think that ME 2 will be a better game in almost all ways but I gotta say; I'm looking more forward to Dragon Age!

I think Bioware learned from the filler quests, and will fix that with ME2.

I wonder....If Mass Effect comes out in Japan, will they think the dialogue is awkward?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I can see that.  They will probably say the dialogue is awkward since it doesn't have stange sexual innuendos every other line as well as revenge for us saying how dialogue in their games was awkward.

Maybe, but they'd get a kick out of Shephard on the dance floor!

Is this really true?
