i see that microsoft dropped abruptly in 04-05 is that when the announced the xbox 360?

No, that's just the drop from year 3 to 4 for the original XB. If the 360 was announced in this period, I doubt it made much of an impact (and even less if it wasn't of course :P)

Yeah, but it looks like Nintendo (consoles) was (somewhat) close to dropping like Sega.

I would really like to see how much Nintendo earned/lost on the 64 and Cube, but I guess that's impossible.

Well the 360 was launched in 2005, right?

Also, I've heard that Nintendo has never shown a non-profitable year in their entire existence. They didn't lose money on the 64 or GC, I know that much.

I'm starting to wonder if I messed up the dates in the graphs... Ah, I'll check into that tomorrow or later.

I edited my above post to answer your other question, but in case you didn't see it:

That's correct, but it includes the GB/GBA, which they undoubtably earned tons of money on.

So excluding the handhelds, how did Nintendo fare? I'm not so sure they made money on their first 2 3D machines.

Wasn't it always sort of their policy to not sell systems at a loss? I've never really thought about it before, but it seems hard to imagine that they lost money with those two consoles, especially considering all of the huge games with amazing sales they had on them. I suppose it's possible though. The N64 and GC console sales looked respectable to me..

The loss I'm thinking is possible, is that the HW + SW benefits weren't high enough to pay for the R&D (scheduling how the console would be).
