LBP, MGS4, Uncharted etc... have already begun that very deed :D

I'm pretty sure he means on a genre basis, not an individual series basis. MGS4 and Uncharted all have similiar games and experiences on other consoles, like Tomb Raider, Gears of War and Splinter Cell for instance. LBP is totally unique though, I'll give you that one.

I dunno, Splinter Cell and MGS are not as similar as people think. Go play Double Agent then come back and play MGS4. To me, the experiences are vastly different. Uncharted & Tomb Raider - yup they're pretty similar in most respects I agree there.

I have played both. In many respects they are vastly similiar.

1. Both special operative types.
2. Both use a similiar arsenal of guns, grenades and a knife.
3. Both stealth oriented third person shooters, and the only two of high quality.
4. Both very linear but offer some degree of choice involving who you buddy up with. In Double Agent you can make decisions that put your trust up in your agency or your undercover operation. In MGS4 you can choose to buddy up with rebels or go it alone in the first two chapters.

Main differences

1. About 8 hours of cutscenes.

Well...they do have similarities as well. However, people buy a Playstation for MGS because of it's unique experience: story/cutscenes/comical refences Snake, etc etc... That's what I think he meant by differentiating itself. Now if MGS goes multiplat, that "differentiating" is gone! But, you have good points here so no need for me to challenge you further :)

I agree..

MGS multiplatform? THATS BLASPHEMY!

Actually Onyx was right on the money with what I meant. No doubt MGS4 is a great game and pushes units and is pretty unique but it's not genre unique. Twisted Metal is pretty genre unique. I'm sure there are other car combat games but they are probably only on PC and they have no name value to market as a substitute.

MGS4 is like Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, God Of War, etc. They may be great games that will sell units but they have pretty popular substitutes in the same genre on other conoles. They wont stretch the genre reach of the PS3 either. LBP on the other hand does, as well as Twisted Metal will.

However, what I'm saying is, a bit of the Playstation's exclusives are platform defining regardless of genre. GOW is platform defining in the hack & slash/action genre, Gran Turismo is platform defining in the racing genre, LBP is platform defining in the platformer/2d side scroller genre, Final Fantasy (is - Versus XIII/was - FFXIII) platform defining in the RPG genre, MGS is platform defining in the stealth action genre. See where I'm going here, just like Halo/Gears are platform defining in the Shooter genre and Mario Kart is platform defining in the racing genre as well as Super Mario Bros being platform defining in the platforming genre.

Your statement was that Twisted Metal will help PS3 differentiate itself from the others. All those games I mentioned, regardless of genre, help differentiate their respective consoles which was my original point, hence sales being high for each, and/or system sellers, making them platform defining titles. I hope that clears up any confusion.

You're just talking about different games. Every game in existence that isn't an actual carbon copy waiting for a lawsuit matches your criteria. His point was that Twisted Metal is different enough from all other current games to warrant it's own attention as an individual. Most of the games you mentioned are merely the best but have considerable competition from other series that are vastly similiar to them.

You also keep saying "platform defining" at the end of every example when RV never said anything about that. He said, and I quote "I thought they should have came out with this game on the PS3 much sooner since it helps differentiate the PS3 gaming catalog from other consoles."How does Gran Turismo differentiate the PS3 from other consoles when the 360 has Forza Motorsport? It's the exact same kind of game. Ditto for God of War and Ninja Gaiden/Ninja Blade. God of War isn't even unique on it's own console and has both Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Heavenly Sword as similiar experiences. Stealth action isn't even a genre, and MGS is a third person shooter. There are plenty of them across all the consoles. It's gameplay mechanics are rediculously similiar to quite a few games currently on the market. Those are all games located in saturated genres, and that was his point. Twisted Metal along with LBP, may have slight similarities to other games of the past, but they are far too unique in this consle generation and help the console stand out because no one else has anything like it.

I agree with everything you said. Never said I didn't. Just that your point wasn't what I was refering to by deferentiation. You're talking about differentiation amongst genre's while I'm talking about adding a new genre to the gaming catalog. Two different things.

If they are making this I hope they can make it quickly and release it soon. Twisted Metal is oen of my favourite games ever (World Tour and Black being 2 games I rate as best 2 player games ever).

Any new Twisted will no doubt be awesome...as long as it has split screen co-op. My god, I'd rip them a new one if they made it online mulitplayer only....

Hmm, pie.

I think someone earlier in the thread quoted jaffe as saying he would never abandon split screen. Much like you, I would go crazy if they didn't have it.

You've never played Gran Turismo if you believe it's the same kind of game as Forza.   Forza is very 'arcadish' and Gran Turismo is very much sim.  In racing games that is a drastic difference.  That's like saying Motorstorm or Grid is the same type of game as Gran Turismo.  It's not.   Much like Third Person Shooters aren't the same as First Person shooters in the Shooter Genre.    Sure they are both 'shooters games'  but they aren't the same type of game.

Ditto for God of War and Ninja Gaiden/Ninja Blade. God of War isn't even unique on it's own console and has both Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Heavenly Sword as similiar experiences.

God of War really wasn't unique in terms of gameplay.  Although God of War is completely unique in the essence that never has a game of it's type told such a compelling and interesting story.   But  I agree God of War isn't necessarily different than some similar games.

Stealth action isn't even a genre, and MGS is a third person shooter. There are plenty of them across all the consoles. It's gameplay mechanics are rediculously similiar to quite a few games currently on the market. Those are all games located in saturated genres, and that was his point.

Stealth action has become a form of sub genre in recent years and Metal Gear is pretty one of a kind.   In terms of gameplay mechanics,  story telling, play styles.   Sure it's third person, but it's unlike any third person on the market. It also incorporates a first person mechanic in the game.

Twisted Metal along with LBP, may have slight similarities to other games of the past, but they are far too unique in this consle generation and help the console stand out because no one else has anything like it.

I agree Twisted Metal, LBP will help differentiate the PS3's lineup.   But MGS4 / Gran Turismo 5 most certainly will do that as well.
