Forums - Gaming - The Future Of The JRPG And How They Can Grow

I know alot of people are coming out and saying that the jrpg is dead or it's just too much of the same thing and I agree with jrpgs being the same for the last 10 years.I believe the only way jrpgs can grow is if one leads the way or opens the door for different ideas. What i'm saying is we need a jrpg thats not only a great seller but can be a revolution to the jrpg genre like Final Fantasy 7 was.The only games that come to mind that can accomplies that is either Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. But those game are not coming out anytime soon.So we go to the next popular jrpg which is Kingdom Hearts 3 but we have no idea when thats coming out.I know this may be alittle bit outragous but I have decided to put my faith in Tales Of Ten.Its the next popular jrpg in Japan that I can think of and I think it has the potential to lead the jrpg.Sure there are games like Shin Megami Tensei that are very different and bring new ideas but lets face it people if it did not do it then it probably can't do it now.And its not as popular in Japan like the Tales series is.The tales series have been know to bring us a great battle system, lovable character, and cliche but well done stories. If tales can bring us new ideas to their battle system and bring us original but great characters like what they did with Yuri from TOV then i believe they can do it.Its a tough bet but a bet i am willing to make.We can no longer wait for Final Fantasy 13 to bring us the change we need because it seems as if Final Fantasy 13 is moving further and futher away from us with SE saying that because of the problem they are having with Dragon Quest it could effect the release of Final Fantasy 13

I don't get the point of this. Both Dragon Quest IX and Final Fantasy XIII will likely be released before the next "Tales of..." game on the Wii.

Anyhoos, if RPGs need some inspiration, they can simply look Atlus' way. Their output on the PS2 and DS has been phenomenal and varied while still feeling very JRPG in nature.

Put them on consoles that aren't dead in Japan and the problem will be solved.

We need a savior. Someone bold. Someone of vision. Someone like...

Final Fantasy XIII seems to be trying something new and interesting...

[I know there is gonna be a post praising the RPG's on the DS in here soon...]

I think Persona 3 and 4 have already proven that the genre isn't dead and that it can innovate. They may not have sold enough to meet your requirements, but I think they still prove what the genre is capable of and that there isn't really need to worry about stagnation in the genre as a whole.

But the Shin Megami Tensei series has always been innovative and different since the first ones that got released in the 90's and it really has done nothing at all in pushing the genre forward before so why sould it now when its still not that popular in Japan

Persona 4 sold better than both of the latest Tales of games in Japan, if that's not popular enough in Japan to change anything then I wonder why you put your hopes in Tales of Ten

TOV was on the Xbox 360 and Japan did not like TOS2 but I just get the feeling that Tales of Ten is going to sell big and is going to be the best and most innovative in the series yet.The tales series before could sell 300k to 400k in it's first week easy last gen and thats the full lifespan for all the games in the Shin Megami Tenei series except Persona 4 which has only sold 500k encluding the american sells.Tales of Destiny 2 sold 500k in its first week in japan.

Where are you getting this information that the Tales series sold 300 to 400k in it's first week in Japan?  If you are talking about worldwide fine, but no Tales game has sold those numbers in Japan alone and that's what we are talking about is popularity in Japan.
