Forums - Gaming - Sonic's Genesis Collection: Does the Genesis do what PS3/360 don't?

Looking over Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, it appears that maybe that it has genres that have been generally lacking this generation, or my perception of it at least.  Please confirm or deny this.  I see these:

1. 2D platformers.  The game has a bunch in them, from Sonic, to Dynamite Headdy, to Kid Chameleon.  These seem to be generally lacking.  One could go as far to say, "Mascot games".  As far as this generation goes PS3 and 360, all I really see is Little Big Planet trying to be a new entry in this nice.

2. JRPs.  This collection has all Phantasy Stars, and the Shining Series.  I know the 360 has had some entries, but not much on the PS3.

3. Scrolling screen arcade brawlers.  You have Streets of Rage 1-3, and also Golden Axe in here.  Not sure of how many have been on the PS3 and 360.  Doesn't seem many that come to mind.  Top one can be argued to be Castle Crashers on the 360.  Games in the Final Fight mode seem close to nothing.

4. Rogue like random dungeon romps.  There is one game on the 360, Arcadia Warriors (?) via Live that would fit this.  Outside of that, not sure anything else.  Maybe Miner: Dig Deep fits, but that isn't a Rogue-like game.

5. 3D dungeon crawls.  The Genesis Collection gets Shining in the Darkness.  Also Phantasy Star (original) has this.

Anyone else have any comment on this?  Like, can you name exceptions to what I wrote?

For 2D platformers, there is Braid. And soon (I hope) there will be Owlboy!

I think it's obvious based on your examples where those types of games have gone to...Xbox Live. Braid, Castle Crashers, Arkadian Warriors and others have given us the old school vibe, and on the cheap too. You will not be seeing games like these in their current forms at retail most likely. That ship sailed a long time ago.

There's also Pixeljunk Eden which is a 2D platformer, right?  That's what I consider it anyway.  Fat Princess looks to be a similar game to say Castle Crashers as well, although not out yet.  You could also somewhat argue that Crash Commando is sort of a 2D platformer/hybrid platformer as well.

In terms of the RPGs, I agree whole heartedly..no rpg released within the last 5, maybe 10 years is as fun as Phantasy Star III, to me anyway.  They just don't have the same appeal..they try and be overly-innovative and, for me anyway - I'm not speaking for everyone - it ruins the game.

I haven't played Pixeljunk Eden or Crash Commando so I don't know what they are. I'm pretty sure Fat Princess isn't like Castle Crashers though. Castle Crashers is a scrolling brawler like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. Isn't Fat Princess about two teams trying to roll a fat chick like a ball into some goal of theirs?

Not so much..a little bit, it is to get the princesses.  It's not exactly a side scrolling brawler, but it's a brawler none-the-less..theres a lot more involved than castle crashers, and the camera can go up and down as well as side to side, but the fighting, from what I've seen, is very similar.  The biggest difference is the classes and such, maybe like an 'open-world' brawler, but not really open world..so I don't know what you'd call that...but it also has an objective, which Castle Crashers didn't, and is mutli-player team-vs-team based also.  It's just a more complicated multiplayer version of the game..I guess?

Ok, so maybe now it sounds a bit different..anyone else care to clarify exactly what you'd consider Fat Princess to be in the genre of?

Capture the flag.

Capture the flag isn't a genre..it's a game type. =/

Anyone know why this didn't get a Wii release? SNK has released its collections on Wii so it can't just be about the virtual console.

Cue hilarious jokes about the game being too powerful...

Ok it's official, I need this compilation ASAP!!! But I'm brooooooooooke!!!
