I think it's obvious based on your examples where those types of games have gone to...Xbox Live. Braid, Castle Crashers, Arkadian Warriors and others have given us the old school vibe, and on the cheap too. You will not be seeing games like these in their current forms at retail most likely. That ship sailed a long time ago.

There's also Pixeljunk Eden which is a 2D platformer, right?  That's what I consider it anyway.  Fat Princess looks to be a similar game to say Castle Crashers as well, although not out yet.  You could also somewhat argue that Crash Commando is sort of a 2D platformer/hybrid platformer as well.

In terms of the RPGs, I agree whole heartedly..no rpg released within the last 5, maybe 10 years is as fun as Phantasy Star III, to me anyway.  They just don't have the same appeal..they try and be overly-innovative and, for me anyway - I'm not speaking for everyone - it ruins the game.

I haven't played Pixeljunk Eden or Crash Commando so I don't know what they are. I'm pretty sure Fat Princess isn't like Castle Crashers though. Castle Crashers is a scrolling brawler like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. Isn't Fat Princess about two teams trying to roll a fat chick like a ball into some goal of theirs?
