Forums - General - Gallup Poll Shows 12-Point Jump In Congressional Approval Rating

Kind of surprising given all the recent hub-bub over the stimulus.  But frankly the media and most politicians on both sides tend to blow things out of proportion and overanalyze things.

Congress' Approval Rating Jumps to 31%

More positive ratings from Democrats largely responsible for increase

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup's latest congressional job approval rating, from a Feb. 9-12 poll, shows a sharp 12 percentage-point increase from last month, rising from 19% to 31%. While still quite negative on an absolute basis, this is the best rating for Congress in nearly two years.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Once they see the "stimulus" is completely ineffective in improving the economy it'll go right back down to total crap instead of just crap. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Yay, we are up to 1 in 3. Nice. I wonder if you could keep your job if only 1 in 3 thought you were good at it?

Yes, but imagine the only candidate who could replace you was a loony idiot called the "Republican Party". This is the problem with FPTP democracy - I wish the US and UK had proportional representation despite the downsides.

Congress always has a far lower approval rating than the President. People only directly elect their two Senators and their one representative. It is pretty easy to get frustrated with people who you don't elect.

I'm not saying this is good or bad, I'm just saying that is reality. Look at congressional approval rating historically and this is generally true.

Akuma sometimes you are too much... Once the porkulus bill fails and only adds to the chaos and prolongs this recession, people will hate the Congress, I assure you of that. Finger pointing is not partisan

I'm quoting a survey done by an independent third party.  This survey was taken right in the middle of the whole stimulus debacle.  The House passed its version in late January.  This survey was taken Feb. 9-12.

You are watching too much Fox News halogamer.  Many branches of the media have grossly overestimated how much the American people dislike the stimulus bill.  This survey is strong evidence of that.

Come on dude, turn off the Limbaugh and Hannity.

I think it's going to take a bit more than 1 gallup poll to show if people actually believe congress is improving. It's improved insanely low rating of 14.3% in September 2008, but CNN's last poll shows a -42pt spread between approval and disapproval (29-71). It was completed on 2/08, FYI.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The survey you quoted is 2 points off from this one mrstickball, and it has no option for neutral, so everything is counted as approval or disapproval...here are a few more:
