Same for Level-5 - no AAA games since the company has been estabilished in 1998.

I guess some people still dont get it that neither PS3 or 360 is a platform of choice for the genre this gen. There is no fight between the two for the future jRPG games. This fight only exists in fanboys minds. People should be happy that some studious still bother making these games in HD instead of switching to DS/Wii. But instead we have this ridiculously high level of expectations for every exclusive HD jRPG and if scores dont match it then the game is getting trashed (by people who have not played it, of course)

Level 5 done Dragon Quest 8 and that's AAA. It's one of the best JRPG's of all-time.

And the Wii still has years to go before it builds up a decent JRPG library. The 360 is the JRPG console ATM.

Got bored with Dragon Quest 8 so I did not finish it.Maybe I sould give it another shot

I know it's not techinically a JRPG, but Valkyria Cronicles is the best thing fromt he Land of the rising sun this gen.Definitely AAA.

I'm not really suprised about that score. It IS only one score though. Expectations are high this gen. Let's hope that we get something to meet them in the near future.

Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?

right... DQVIII is a dragon quest game, it´s always going to have 'AAA' reviews. Personally I liked DQVIII but got bored with the gameplay after a while, like in every other Level-5 RPG I´ve played. The dragon quest Zenithia trilogy is much, much better than DQVIII.

You people think it´s easy to make AAA games? Not only you need lots of employees, lots of resources, a great engine, great writers and producers, but also very strong promotion, marketing to build up huge hype.

I think the main issue is that WRPGs have spoiled reviewers. It's hard to really make good comparisons when the best JRPGs have paled in comparison to the best WRPGs.

I mean, we're comparing:

Lost Odyssey
Tales of Vesperia
Valkyria Chronicles

To:

Mass Effect
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Fable 2

Kind of hard to argue, given the 4th best WRPG is better than the best JRPG, so far this gen.

What now? I'd say that Level 5 has made at least three AAA games.

Well, that's purely subjective. Even if wRPGs have "spoiled" reviewers, does that mean that they have the right to mark down jRPGs? When a person is reviewing Star Ocean, should he have at the back of his mind: "I wish the story branched out more like Mass Effect" No. Because that would be an unfair comparison. When Western reviewers stop wishing every jRPG released were more like wRPGs, then we may start to see reviews which are more fair, and not clouded with bias.

Well, you've given light onto the big problem we have.

What is "AAA"? According to many it's for games that are 90+ on review aggregate websites (Which would make Dragon Quest  Level 5's only AAA game), but what does that really mean? It means that a bunch of random hired reviewers (who are possibly biased) really liked the game. Does that mean I will, or you will? No.

"AAA" should be purely personal opinion.

Cactus - Given user reviews for some of the said titles vs. official reviews, I'd say reviewers are marking scores down.

Tales of Vesperia is unarguably the best the franchise has ever seen. Yet it's been reviewed lower than Symphonia. Why? It's better than Symphonia. ToV has also garnered 9.0+ scores from most fan aggregates, but reviewers still have it low (Game Informer being the worst of the bunch).

So because of that, and just about every other JRPG getting poor scores, I think that reviewers are looking for something in JRPGs that just aren't there. JRPGs are a totally different breeds, with entirely different focuses. What could a reviewer hate about Tales of Vesperia? Valkyria Chronicles? Yet they've reviewed both games massively lower than Fallout, or Mass Effect.
