Pretty standard for a non-FF JRPG.

not really, all the other Star Ocean Titles Scored in the High 8's.... in a 7 for a SO title is.......not normal, still waiting for IGN though just for the hell of fit.

A quick rundown of GI reviews for JRPGs this gen:

90 - Blue Dragon
85 - Lost Odyssey
85 - Valkyria Chronicles
85 - Persona 3
83 - Disgaea 3
83 - Eternal Sonata
83 - The World Ends With You
80 - Infinite Undiscovery
80 - Persona 4
73 - Tales of Vesperia
73 - Folklore
70 - The Last Remnant
70 - Culdcept Saga
60 - Enchanted Arms
60 - Phantasy Star Universe
53 - Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom

Looking at the list, you notice 2 glaring things:

1) Their reviews for new IPs seem to go in the general direction of average scores
2) Their reviews for established IPs are the exact opposite. Horrible scores for ToV, and Persona 3/4

Take of it as you will, but those Tales of Vesperia and Persona scores are a pretty bad mark on them. I'll wait for the GameTrailers and RPG Fan scores, as well as IGN. GT and RPGF are the best 2, IMO.

And FYI, the ToV review they gave was only 0.25 higher in both the primary and second opinion than this SO4 score. So I really wonder...

Game Informer aren't exactly fans of the series so a 7 isn't a bad score at all.  I see the game getting a good review on IGN since they like the series enough.

Oh, and GI's track record with the SO series:

83 - Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS2, 2004)
70 - Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP, 2008)
70 - Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP, 2009)

That's a pretty mixed bag, I think. Same scores for the PSP games. Make of it as you wish.

But SO has never been a critically lauded game.  Meta for those same three games:

80 - Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS2, 2004)

77 - Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP, 2009)

SO2 is better than VP, this is true. I have played both and have come to this conclusion. Anyways, I can't trust GI, I don't know why anyone ever has. Look at the score they gave ToV,  prolly the best rpg that has come out this generation. Also, lower scores than either personas deserved, lower score than TWEWY deserved, etc. GI s really made for shooters, action games and sports games. That is the demographic.

As for rpgs this gen, we have had some turds like IU, but we have had some good games. We have ToV, ToS:DOTNW which is fun even if it had a low budget, LO, the two personas, VC, and we are having SO4 coming up which even by the score, looks very good. Not only that we have more rpgs coming up. By the end of the gen I believe we will have even more good ones.

I'm kinda shocked that they rated Eternal Sonata, IU, and Blue Dragon all above Tales of Vesperia. Very weird.
