The Ghost of RubangB said: I played The World Ends With You for about half the game, and never touched Sonic Chronicles, but for some reason I am inclined to believe that there is no way in hell TWEWY is better than a bad Sonic RPG. It really was that bad. The only thing going for it was the fact that it was an original IP, but the story sucked, the dialogue was even worse, and the controls were boring and stupid. How many times per conversation does somebody say "Take off your headphones! That's so rude!" and then you ignore them and think to yourself "..." ? How hard did the game need to pound it into my head that the protagonist is hip and rude and young and fresh and holy shit, does he have headphones on? |
Oh yeah? The story in Sonic Chronicles sucks hard, Bioware added a lot of their dialogue trees which are all meaningless in the end and the game's ending is one of the worst ever. You would think that after so little playtime the game would continue, but no, it's ending with a cliffhanger and then the developers are literally praising themselves for making such an awesome game.
Regarding battles, TWEWY at least follows the conventional RPG rules, like you get EXP and stuff for winning battles and more EXP for defeating harder enemies. In Sonic Chronicles you get next to no EXP for battles, but you need like 10k of them to level up. What it comes down to is that you don't have to fight regular enemies at all, because you get nothing in return. Which is kind of good, because enemies get ridiculously strong and unfair.
For example they hit you and get their own HP completely refilled regardless of how much damage they did to you. Or their normal attacks hit two or three of your characters and drain half of their HP. Funnily enough, all special attacks of enemies can be blocked by performing Elite Beat Agents like action commands. The bosses in the game are totally easy and usually beaten in two rounds of battle. That's complete and utter garbage. Normal attacks of normal enemies are the most powerful stuff you encounter and the bosses are a walk in a park, even if you run from every single normal battle in the game. Well, it's not like you get EXP for these battles, the only time you should fight normal enemies is at the start of the game until you reach level 3. After that, running from battles is recommended for all of the above reasons.
The EXP you gain from solving sidequests (usually completed in a few minutes) and boss fights is enough to carry you through the whole game. The music is atrocious. If you thought there would be remixes of classic Sonic themes, you thought wrong. There are only meaningless and annoying tunes in crappy quality.
The stats in the game aren't named correctly. Attack doesn't show how strong you are, it stands for accuracy. Defense is evasion. If you want to know how strong a character is, you have to read the characters description in a seperate menu and there it also only says "the character is strong/medium/weak", you won't find any numbers to accurately show how strong they are.
Sonic Chronicles is terrible. The first half of an hour of the game gives you the impression that you are playing a nice basic RPG in the Sonic universe, but it's only going to get worse from there. The gameplay is broken in so many ways, the only positive things about the game are the first 30 minutes and that the graphics are nice to look at.
In short: The game sucks hard.
EDIT: I might add what I think about TWEWY. It's a decent RPG, but not more. It has some nice ideas, but the gameplay becomes boring and repetitive after a while. Besides walking around and fighting enemies you really aren't doing much. The soundtrack was quite good.
