Forums - Gaming - I'm so SICK of "bad ass" characters, dialogue, storylines and art design.

People read books and watch movies about so called "bitch" characters all the time, people just like you and me who have their own daily problems, emotional issues, financial worries, social problems, etc. The point is, the portrayal of such characters is taboo in the video game industry as opposed to other storytelling mediums. Why can there not be an acceptence of a greater variety of characters, including the bad ass ones but also the more "human" ones?

how many of those characters are in stories about combating things that want to destroy all of humanity?

these are action oriented games.  how many action movies do you see with those sorts of people?

LOL.

@posts above.

There is big difference between playing with a guy that is a badass and is secure in his shoes on the battlefield, playing with a dude that swears ever 10 seconds cause hes a little bitch and playing as a "bitch".

Master Chief is as badass as they come...and he doesn't interupt my gameplay with stupid dialoge about how hes gonna ram his needler gun up the Floods ass.

this post fails hard. Complaining about Killzone 2's enemies having red eyed gas masks? Get out of here.

Let me geuss, you have a legitimate explanation as to why these characters have to wear gas masks with glowing eyes that leaves no plot holes? Look, almost everyone openly admits that the designs of the Helghast are purely for "aesthetic" reasons (or to be more specific, to be more bad ass). The question is not whether they look good or not, the question is, why is the video game industry in a position where it is necessary to make everything more "bad ass"?

HOLY CRAP THE HELGHAST ARE COMING IN THEIR TANKS. Hang on, how much is my gas bill costing back home? Should I fire this shot because I may be sued when the war is over? You want that?

People don't play games so that they can learn about a fictional character's money problems or relationship issues. People play shooters to shoot things.

Raiden was a great character despite the fact that I pretty much hated him in MGS2.

I agree with your post but not for the reasons you listed.

I don't mind swear words...etc as long as im still playing or its movign the story forward. I hate when they stop the gameplay to build up some character being badass..

Gears 2 for example. The "Cole train" scene...waste fo time. Every 2 minutes of "yee-haww...lets get them sons of bitches" talk on the beginnning...waste of time.

Devs need to stop interupting my gameplay with stupid dialoge that they think is "bad ass"!

Not all big FPS games are jumping on this bandwagon. Halo 3 and FEAR 2 for example...

I perfectly agree. I'm not against swear words, I'm against their use when it comes off as simply tacked on and forced for the sake of making the character look more bad ass.

Bioshock is a good example of an FPS game that does not rely on the industry's 2 biggest compulsions; that everything needs to be bad ass and that everything needs to have multiplayer. That said, Bioshock is not the best example of a "human element" in games, but it certainly deviates far from the standard of action games today and is better for it; It's dialogue, storyline and presentation are highly acclaimed alongside it's refined gameplay mechanics.

I don't have a problem with badass characters when it's well done. For example, I absolutely love Dante's attitude in Devil May Cry, it makes the game even more enjoyable.

who wants to play as a bitch?

A character that shows some form of emotion is a bitch, is that what it is?

I only agree with the part that's talking about that heroes need to stop being pre-programmed killing machines. It's only acceptable when the character is NOT HUMAN. Killing people and not even having some form of emotional stuggle? that's impossible. It's life you're taking.

TBH, it's one of the biggest problems shooters have. Typical stories is the other.

This man speaks the truth! I don't mind the characters as much as the bad VO, dialouge and cutscenes.

Also, I think your being very ignorant with the statement that the villians in Killzone 2 are given their appearance to be more "badass". To be more menacing? Yes. To be more interesting? Yes. To be more badass? No. They sure don't look like Arnald the governator/space marine on steroid type guys to me. Your just lumping as much as you can under the title "badass" and your argument looks weaker for it.
