Forums - Sony - Killzowned Engine to bring in more PS3 Exclusives!

I agree. I mean, even if they don't agree with the article, which they're entitled to that, at least be fair about it. In reference to makingmusic: Well I wonder, if other Sony developers can use this engine, why do you think they wouldn't bro? Just curious btw...

They prefer their own, it seems... what you've written is what you know best. Your best example is Naughty Dog... tbh, they don't even need the KZ2 engine with how Uncharted 2 looks!

@ darendt......just stop, please, just STOP, with every tap, tap, tap, of the keyboard you further embarass yourself.

On topic: Nice find Cloud, introducing a new programming format to the industry can be viewed as nothing but a win. I only hope it does (not) remain exclusive, mainly because I would love to see what the format can do on different consoles with a little more money backing it up.

As NJ5 said earlier in the thread, I fail to see any concrete evidence that the engine will be reusable by other developers. As of now, it's just speculation. If the engine is well documented and flexible, I could see Sony's stable of developers using it, but I have a hard time imagining 3rd party developers even considering using this engine at the cost of the entire 360 userbase.

That would be cool if that happened...but I say the engine would only be for Sony Exclusive Titles...I dont think Sony would want their engine being displayed n games on other consoles...

And I agree Syphon Filter 5 would be sweet with this engine :) or a Soccom most definitely...

I was a skeptic at first when I saw the first Killzone 2 trailer back in 2005 or 06 whenever it was but now from what I can see it looks just as good as it did back then if not better

I've read the word "engine" so many times that I don't even know what it means anymore...

"Oh, well, um, that's all there is of these. But in about eight and a half minutes, we'll be serving some delicious onion tartlets."

"Tartlets? Tartlets? Tartlets? The word has lost all meaning."

Wow good points in there man :)

@ Xen
You got me. How could I forget Naughty Dog and their SPECTACULAR engine! And hell, Santa Monica with theirs! Well, basically, maybe some of the more low key Sony devs could use this engine, but since Sony devs like having their own stuff, this could go either way. Regardless, the possibilities of games being built on the Killzone engine would be interesting I think!

Yeah. I had a thread about this a while ago...

Still, I see the engine being used almost exclusively by GG... but you know, there's always helping developers within the Sony FP world. Who was it that helped Guerilla with stuff? Insomniac, no?

@ CGI-Quality......hmmmm, thats really sad, because with Sony's current position this gen it may not have the ability to financial become as successful as it could if the format could be marketed between the 3 consoles.

(crosses fingers) here's to hope..........

This would suck, means more games with pretty graphics that actually hinder important things like gameplay.

Guess we can look forward to some more games with technical issues 'weight' affecting gameplay.

The weight feel was not the problem, its the fact they don't know how to code the right stick.  They don't use the entire stick and the fast movements take up too much of the space.  They also use like 3 different speeds in a tiny area for the stick instead of a constant speed, or something near constant.

I believe it was Insomniac and Santa Monica, no?

@ TheTruth
Well it's actually a good engine if you ask me, so I understand your great liking for it :)

Could be Santa Monica too. Both companies are hardware wizards.

I guess we'll see?? Seems like the only people likely to use the "Killzowned" engine, are high budget developers that don't already have reliable engines to use. That rules out EA and pretty much all the multi-plat titles obviously. I imagine if a developer really wanted to make a great looking game, without spending a fortune, they will likely go the route of the Unreal Engine given it is also a graphical power house, is much more commonly used, costs less, and will be available for multiplat titles.

If they want to make the engine proprietary to the PS3, there will not be many developers using it at all. The money is with multi-platform titles and the Wii/360 right now when it comes to software. Developers that are not first party to Sony would be foolish to use this engine and shut off the larger selling markets.

The URE3 isnt that great. Unreal tournament sucked. As for the money, games like KZ2 sell consoles. The more games like this, the more user base the PS3 gets and the more the dev will make.

This is exactly why M$ is hurting our industry though. They release a sub-par console that is capable of very good graphics and keep the developers from pushing there games due to its inefficiencies. With just the PS3 and Wii, the devs would be able to focus on the PS3 and make amazing games. As is stands now, they either need to make there game on the PS3 to the specs they desire and port to 360, leaving content behind or offering DLC or they need to make it on both at the same time and gimp the PS3 version once they reach there limits on the 360. Exclusive is where its at on the PS3 right now. We are a lot pickier when it comes to our game purchases because we are probably an older crowd. It seems to me that the 360 and Wii have a ton of shovel ware that gets eaten up. Not so on the PS3 front.

Hmmm.......the J man wonders what you were saying last gen when the ps2 was the inferior console and was king of shovelware.

While the PS2 had shovelware, it had a healthy supply of great games releasing from both Sony and third parties. Balance is key.
