Metal Gear Solid 2 is by far the best in the series.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is by far the worst of the 4 main games.
The person below me stated excatly the opposite, how funny and yet intriguing :)
It seems everyone likes different types of Metal Gear games xD.

True, a lot of the story in the prior games were told via codec. A lot of the easter eggs popped up via codec too. Background about the characters (like Vamp being bi-sexual, or the Boss's codename being "the Joy"), Solid Snake's/Naked Snake's cardboard box fetish, and all kinds of random trivia popped up if you went to the codec at just the right time. And playing through the first three, the stuff was optional. In MGS4, you didn't have the option. You watched the cutscenes and that was it. There wasn't much left for you to discover.
And what the heck was up with all of the illegal drug use!? Snake shot heroine into his neck 321 times through the course of that game! In the end, he and Liquid were like two homeless guys fighting over the last hit of dope!!

I did and so did many others. You may need glasses. It also the lowest selling game in the series (well, MGS4 is now, though it will outsell 3 in time) and also the lowest rated title in the series.
Best: all.
Worst: n/a.

Also ranked in the top 5 of IGN's user's all time greatest games list. Go figure.
I actually enjoyed MGS3 (Subsistence ver. cuz the camera is better) then the others. Worst...MGS PO & PO+ ...PO was ok..but didnt have the same MGS feeling as the console versions did.
best for me was 3, epic boss battles, the joy, see the roots of the patriots, a young ocelot, etc etc
worst was 2, i disliked playing as raiden. he's just a d-bag
