puffy said: I've tried to correct/add as much as I could, please let me know if I've missed anything of note. I'd also like to bring a couple of points up..
Unknowns:
- Miyamoto is at work on two DS titles, one for home and one for a more social context. At least one is likely to launch in 2010, it is unknown which of Nintendo's internal teams will be taking up the development of the titles in question.
- Will Nintendo launch the next generation of their portable line in 2011?
- What are Nintendo Network Service Development, Nintendo Software Development and Design and Nintendo Special Project's Group? They have appeared on Wikipedia with no information.
Mainly the third one, does anyone have any idea what these new teams are and where they've come from? |
Hi, this is my first post here, but I can answer your last question (I run the Nintendo Wikia so I know a lot about the Nintendo divisions!).
Anyway, for Nintendo Network Service Department, here's what I know:
They are the only development division within Nintendo that works both on software and hardware. They have created things such as Personal Trainer: Walking and the Activity Meter, assisted with the Mii Channel and Wii Shop Channel, created the Pokemon mini, assisted in the creation of WarioWare Twisted! and Slide Adventure MAGKID, the Sattelaview, the Mobile GB Adapter, and the Pokemotion, which was a wand that when you shake revealed images.
NSD&D:
Now for the Nintendo Software Development and Design, this one is a bit confusing. I've got a ton of reasons to believe that this is actually a part of Nintendo EAD, and in fact is the largest division within EAD that consists of EAD1, EAD2, EAD3, EAD4, EAD Tokyo, EAD Sound Group, and EAD UI. EAD Design Technology, if I'm correct, is part of Nintendo EAD but not part of Software Development and Design.
Now Nintendo Special Project's Group:
This one is very confusing. Over the past couple of months I've tried to find information on this group, and for some time I concluded that they were now defunct when Iwata took charge, but then in 2007 Nintendo appointed a new EVP to head Special Projects. The press release could be referring to the fact that he was just working on special projects instead of it actually being a division. This is the only one in which I do not know the answer to, and I'm led to believe that it actually doesn't exist.
Take note: I'm 100% sure of NNSD, about 99% sure of NSD&D, and am clueless when it comes to NSPG.
Hope that helps!
EDIT:
Also, here's some more info regarding NSDD. There are actually two divisions within NSDD, including Nintendo Network Planning Group, which develops the software, and Nintendo Mechanical Design Group, which develops the hardware.
Note: For a full list of developers, just go to the Nintendo Wikia and type in 'List of Nintendo divisions'. It includes around 80 different divisions and companies.
