Forums - Gaming - EDGE reviews BioShock, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk !

Edge, a uk mag often considered as one of the best in the world has reviewed these games : (PS3) Heavenly Sword - 6 (X360) Bioshock - 8 (PS3) Warhawk - 8 (X360) MOH Airborne - 7 (X360) Stuntman Ignition - 6 (X360) Fatal Interia - 6 (X360) MotoGP 07 - 7 (DS) Heroes of Mana - 6 (XBLA) Space Giraffe - 8 (DS) Glory Days 2 - 4 (XBLA ) Wing Commander Arena - 4 So i would say quite bad for Heavenly sword, quite good for MoH (as the last ones were pretty bad) and maybe a little surprising for Bioshock and Warhawk, i dont doubt that Warhawk is good and deserves an 8 but its hard for me to believe that its as good as Bioshock. Sorry if it has already been posted.

Since I haven't played them all I can't comment on them all but the seem a bit harsh.  I take particular exception with Bioshock and Space Giraffe.  Bioshock is better than an 8 for sure.  Space Giraffe got an 8 also.  I don't like space giraffe AT ALL and it got a 2/10 on OXM and a 4.5/10 on Team Xbox.  For this magazine to score Space Giraffe and Bioshock the same is absolutely and totally ridiculous.  After seeing this list, there is no crediblity whatsoever with their reviews in my book...

follow this link to every edge review ever.

I've always trusted edge reviews in the past but like all sites/mags your not gonna agree 100%.

Ive just been on Bioshock for the last 2hrs and i not as blown away with the 10/10s it was first receiving. very good game so far but far from a perfect score imo. I must admit im not a huge fps fan, my favs in the past were doom, goldeneye and halo.

Just out of curiosity, what do you find wrong with Bioshock that makes it far from perfect.  The game is incredibly well rounded and an artful masterpiece.

I've owned -- original Pong, 2600, Vectrex, 5200 Intellivision, coleco, C64, Amiga, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Genesis,  3DO, Jaguar, GBA, Game Gear, DS Lite, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, 360, Wii and I know I'm missing another somewhere.  Along the way I've played every genre known to man and owned a heck of a lot of games.  In my opinion (and it's just that -- an opinion), Bioshock is one of the best all around titles I've ever played in my history of gaming.  There seem to be a lot of other folks who think the same.

Again, after actually seeing edge score this game the same as Space Giraffe (a brand new xbox live arcade game), which is basically a psycodelic tempest throwback, Edge, again in my opinion, was smoking crack when they rated these the same.  It defies even the most fanboyish gamers logic...

@kn
If it was the Jaguar me and you may have been the only people in the US to buy it. My ownership of console refelects your with a few exceptions (no 3DO, Vectrex, Amiga or any handheld except GB) but I do have ALL of the Sega conoles (much to my regret- that's what killed them but that's another story). I've not read Edge or heard much about it- is it available as an online mag? As far as their review of Bioshock, I can only think (w/o having seen their review) that the lack of multiplayer, lack of online play or the use of the Vita Chambers (which might be a big no-no for hardcore shooter fans) might have affected their response. If the send out a patch for pc player's that would disable the Vita Chambers, make getting them restored a part of a mission or having the player make a choice of having the Vita Chamber OR the health stations, I think that might kick their review up a notch. What do you think are the chances that someone might be making a mod such as this even as I type this? It would make a great d/l for the 360. 8)

If you look at a lot of games with similar ratings on Gamerankings.com you'll notice that quite a few of them ended up having reviews which were 20% (or more) below their average ... Part of this is reviewers who don't like the genre of the game who end up building expectations, about this game because of how highly reviewed it has been, and being that it is not able to work miracles it gets punished.

The ONLY exception to this is The Legend of Zelda: OoT which is (by many) considered to be the most impressive game of its time; if it was released today without any changes it would still probably average around 8/10 because so few games have met the level of quality that it did 10 years ago ...

People seem to forget a 6 on Edge is a good game (probably 7-8 on most other places) so the HS score isn't bad.

I wouldn't call it "good"... 6 is their average. Granted, they gave Strikers a 6 (a game I'm loving and which has an 8 overal average), but it also happens the other way around. Their bias is a bit over 1 point down cross plaforms.

The 8 given to Bioshock I find far more surprising... I'd expect a 9 even from them. I've heard nothing but praise (and whining about petty things like render paths and fields of view).

Space Giraffe, is that a Jeff Minter game?

I want an Iridis Alpha remake now!

I disagree. Edge reviews games for what they intend to be. Being a XBLA game shouldn't penalize a game if that's what it's meant to be. Same for multiplayer only games like Warhawk. But I'm of the opinion that things like price should be a factor in a review.

The Vita Chamber isn't an issue as far as I'm concerned and I don't think the patch would necessarily change things. Increasing the difficulty of the game changes several variables -- not just the difficulty or number of monsters but how fast your EVE gets sucked out of you. For those that complain about the Vita Chambers, they should just crank it up one level. They will be happy to have them to not play the same level over and over until they get past a "hard part". Believe it or not, Gears had very, very regular checkpoints which meant you re-spawned very close to where you died and I don't remember anyone making a big stink about that... 2K made it clear that Bioshock wasn't a multi-player game from the get go. I don't see how a reviewer could dock a game for not having something that it never intended to have. Clearly Edge didn't dock Space Giraffe for not having an immersive story. It's just an arcade game and they rated as so... Same for warhawk for that matter -- can't dock it for not having single player. To me, that's just idiotic as any reviewer can knock any game for not having something... What, you mean it doesn't have a screensaver when you pause it? Damn, that's a minus 2 right there! If it had multiplayer and it sucked, well, I would understand...

Bioshock as a whole is a phenomenally well rounded game. Based on the merits of what is in the game and what was intended to be in the game in the first place, It's a high 9 game. Period....

@Kruze -- You misunderstood or I misled -- either way, I'm not knocking Space Giraffe because it is an XBLA game.  I'm knocking it because it is not that great of a game.  I've purchased about a dozen or more XBLA arcade games and played alomost all the demos and space giraffe is average, in my opinion, at best.  There is no way I'd give SG an 8.  MAYBE a 5 or 6.  When enough SG reviews come in I suspect that will be the composite score -- a 5 to 6 overall and rightly so.  These two games (based entirely on their own specific merits) don't belong in the same discussion when talking about great games.

That's going to hurt Bioshock on the tracking websites.

It's already been bumped down to 4th place http://gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?itemname=

Still obviously one of the best games of all time.  The major problem with it is that if you are persistent you can just replay every single room while you constantly die because of the enemies not healing.  Basically a complete idiot can beat the game >_<
